Life Lingers Chapter 4 This is what this chapter is about: The carryover effect of one experience into the next-the very, very recent past- and how it can bleed into the occurring present. Chapter 4 Motorcycles and Misattribution Dolf Zillmann, Jennings Bryant and Joanne Cantor Study In 1975, the psychologists Dolf Zillmann, Jennings Bryant and Joanne Cantor used Girl on a Motorcycle ( a movie) in a classic experiment to demonstrate how physical activity can affect conscious, rational thoughts. All the participants in the study watched the film, but only after engaging in a workout – riding a bike of their own, in fact, albeit just an exercise bike with few if any pounding pistons. The key to the experiment was that each subject took in Marianne Faithfull’s performance while on one of the three different stages of physiological arousal that followed exercising. In the first phase, right after the physical activity is over, we know that our high level of arousal – heart pumping, maybe shortness of breath – are because of having exercised. In the second and key phase, we believe we have calmed down and are back to our normal arousal state, yet we are actually still physiologically aroused. In the third and final phase, arousal is actually returned to normal levels and we correctly believe that we are no longer physiologically aroused. Motorcycles and Misattribution Dolf Zillmann, Jennings Bryant and Joanne Cantor Study The question Zillmann and his colleagues asked was how the participant’s state of arousal following the workout would affect how sexually aroused he became by watching the segment of Girl on a Motorcycle. The subjects in the first phase of the heightened physiological state resulting from the exercise, who were still fully aware of the exercise’s effect on them, didn’t report any greater level of sexual arousal from the movie than did a non-exercising control group. And participants in the third phase, who were no longer actually aroused from the exercise, also were not that sexually aroused by the movie. In fact, both the first and the third group reported fairly negative impression of the film. Importantly, those were the groups that has an accurate read on their arousal level. But then there was a second group. That is where things got interesting. These participants did sense that they were biologically aroused while watching the movie; even though this was really caused by the lingering effects of their exercise. They thought the effect of exercise was over with, so they mistakenly attributed their arousal solely to Marriane Faithfull and her leather-bound adventure. U06A1 (Methods and Findings) U06A1 (Methods and Findings) Student: Institution: Professor: Date of Submission: Introduction In this assignment, I was able to get a real chance to be in the actual field making first hand observations. It was such an interesting activity to move around and watch natural behaviour in the field. During this time, my main objectives involved making observations of random people in their natural environment and how they behaved, how frequent they were into social media. Their frequency to social media usage was judged by how they were using their gadgets such as tablets and cell phones. Another objective involved getting close enough to hear their conversations and capture their attitude on some aspects. All this was done without their knowledge so as to ensure they had their natural behaviour free from influence. Another phase of my activity involved asking some questions about their opinions on some issues such as social media usage. These questions were designed in such a way that a response/behaviour would follow soon enough. The reason for these mechanism was to compare their attitudes towards something and how they actually behaved in relation to their attitudes. Most of my questions were social media related so as to ensure I remained relevant to my research and social psychology. The activity involved observation of ten random subjects and how they interacted with one another, how they behaved as a result of their peer surrounding since the experiment was conducted in a public setting. The observation occurred on two phases. Each phase taking approximately 20-30mins such that I had approximately two minutes for each person. The second phase was the most interesting since this is where I was asking the questions and observing whether the persons would behave in accord to their opinions and attitude. It should be noticed that, at times I would make the observation then pose the question about what I had observed just to see if their actions would match their opinions. Their entire time in the field was really interesting and mind opening. Ethical obligations and challenges Every research will always have some challenges associated with it. The challenges are even more when the subjects under study are humans. This is because we humans have rights and freedoms which ought to be respected and upheld. My study had several challenges. However, such challenges were tackled professionally such that my results were not biased and no violations of whatsoever kind were made. My first challenge was to target selection. The Stanford Prison Experiment 1. It was not ethical to conduct a study according to the way that Zimbardo had conducted it. This is because the rights of the students were violated. The prisoners were treated as real prisoners and were harassed the same way that real prisoners are usually harassed. Waking the prisoners in middle of the night was one of the worst things that the prisoners were passing through. According to the standards of student’s treatment, it was not right to treat students in such a cruel manner. Students were forced to put on prisoners uniforms without underpants, this was a violation of their rights as they had to do whatever they had been commanded against their will. The students went for the auditions in order to become acting prisoners and not real prisoners as they were being treated. In de abrupte omschakeling van offline naar online onderwijs hebben we snelle keuze's moeten maken, er ontstond een veelvoud aan webinars met name gericht op het overdragen van kennis (kwalificatie, volgens de driedeling van Biesta (2012)). Lezing voor de nascholing Make!Do van KC-R & WdKA. De wereld om ons heen verandert in hoog tempo en stelt het onderwijs voor diverse uitdagingen. Manon Mostert, regisseur Stadslab Rotterdam, ontwikkelt al 7 jaar als ontwerper onderwijs voor HBO, VO en af en toe PO. Manon is ervan overtuigd dat het onderwijs baat heeft bij docenten die hun vak met een ontwerpende houding benaderen. Dit maakt het mogelijk om het onderwijs op kleine schaal vorm te geven, maar met grote impact te veranderen. Manon deed de afgelopen twee jaar onderzoek in het kader van haar Masteropleiding Design aan de Willem de Kooning Academie. Haar eindwerk is in januari dit jaar uitgebracht in samenwerking met Boom Uitgeverij als ‘Hey Teacher, Find Your Inner Designer’. Manon pleit met haar boek voor het afschaffen van big-bang, top-down implementaties en geeft met haar ontwerpbenadering docenten instrumenten om het onderwijs van binnenuit, in de kern, te veranderen, als ontwerper. Het boek ‘Hey teacher, find your inner designer’ formuleert tal van uitdagingen waardoor docenten aangemoedigd worden om hun innerlijke ontwerper te ontdekken. Het boek bevat ook een aantal case stories van docenten die durven te falen, want mislukkingen zijn onderdeel van de zoektocht die ontwerpen vaak is. Tijdens de lezing geeft Manon een inkijkje in het doen van onderzoek als ontwerper. Ze zoomt hierbij in op de waarde van een ontwerpende houding als docent en zoomt uit op de gebruikte methodieken in haar onderzoek.

Why is the rush of 3D printing important for my work field? What if everyone can be a designer? With these questions students of the minor Smart Things and first-year students of Communication & Multimedia Design were confronted. The workshop contained a theory part (no more than 20%) and a practical part in which the groups divide on their skillset with 3D design and printing. This presentation also demonstrates a short tutorial of creating a 3D design in Tinkercad. Used as group challenge without any instruction. This group of 40 students created a 3D design (without any instruction) in less than 15 minutes!

Er lijken antwoorden verscholen in deze beweging die de gewenste verandering in het onderwijs op gang kunnen brengen. In mijn missie om het onderwijs te veranderen (met een makende / ontwerpende houding) ben ik begonnen met een wezenlijk onderdeel van het maken: fouten (maken). 7 makers hielden een week lang een dagboek bij van fouten en successen. Deze presentatie geeft zicht op de aanpak, het proces en de uitkomsten van deze zoektocht naar de waarde van fouten. Het vak cultuurdynamiek is bedoeld om het socio-cultureel en wetenschappelijk referentiekader van masterstudenten productontwikkeling verder open te trekken zodat ze hun vakgebied en toekomstige beroepsuitoefening kunnen kaderen in de brede maatschappelijke evoluties en zicht krijgen op tendenzen die hun ontwerp kunnen ondersteunen.
