This document discusses different types of patient monitoring for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. It describes monitoring as the observation of medical parameters over time, either continuously via sensors or periodically. There are several classifications of monitoring based on the target parameter, including cardiac monitoring via electrocardiography, hemodynamic monitoring of blood pressure and flow, respiratory monitoring of oxygen saturation and carbon dioxide levels, neurological monitoring of brain waves and intracranial pressure, and monitoring of blood glucose and during childbirth. Medical monitors use sensors and displays to continuously measure and record vital signs and physiological parameters.
