2. LATOYA RUBY FRAZIER
"Grandma Ruby Braiding JC's Hair." From the series, "The Notion of
Family." 2007.
What inspired me so much about LaToya’s photgraph’s is how she always
incorporates her community. She finds inspiration through people she
actually knows and the things around her. LaToya spoke on how when
she’s thinking about what she wants to capture how geographical
locations affect the body also.
3. MALIK’S INSPIRATION FROM FRAZIER
Since I am very involved in my
community, I drew inspiration
from my barber. My barber is
actually a lesbian women. This
photo I took of her goes against
most gender norms. Hair barbers
are usually men, and usually only
gay men only go to female
barbers. LaToya photographs
inspired me to actually go around
my community to get inspiration
for this project.
”The Norm” by Malik Oliver. January
2016.
4. LAYLAH ALI
Laylah Ali, Untitled, 2000, gouache and pencil on paper. Collection of Susan
Greenberg Minster. Photo courtesy of the artist.
Laylah’s paintings come from things around her like the radio, newspaper,
and the news. I love how Laylah works. Her artistic process shifts. She
does not have a certain concentration, yet she is a perfectionist. Ali just
works in the moment and connect things to the time she is living in.
Laylah Ali’s art performance could be labeled as “Gifted Hands.”
5. MALIK’S INSPIRATION FROM ALI
“All Love in The City” by Malik Oliver. January 2016.
I was inspired by Laylah’s ‘Greenhead’ series drawings. The heads inspired
me because you can tell it had to do with race and gender in America.
My photo depicts how African American men in gangs do not have to
always participate in black on black crimes, but they can give love to
one another.
6. ELLEN GALLAGHER
DeLuxe 2005 Ellen Gallagher.
Ellen surprising takes of hairstyle of magazine beauties first drawn my
attention to her art styles. I was amazed how she bought a new story
behind changing the way the women hair styles were. The way the eyes
and lips revision changed, enlightened me on Ellen’s creative mind.
7. MALIK’S INSPIRATION FROM GALLAGHER
I tried my best, by getting inspiration from
Ellen’s peg leg series, I tried my best to
construct a different vision of a photo
from the original version. I found a very
sexualize photo of singer and actress
Beyonce and thought about making it
into a Christianized type of photo. Also
artists Ellen and Craig Zammiello
collaboration creative direction by
constructing beautiful and perfect
backgrounds that stands out motivated
me also.
