2. Nandi Bull Temple Near Bangalore
On the outskirts of Bangalore, about 15 Km south of the Electronic City, a Nandi
Bull temple has been renovated recently. Cost of renovaton of this temple has
been met by subscriptons from devotees.
Nandi is the sacred bull calf : gatekeeper, and vahana ( vehicle) of God Shiva.
Sculptures of Nandi are a common sight at temples dedicated to Shiva, and he is
partly responsible for the Hindu reverence for living bulls even today. A statue of
Nandi is present as a bull sitng on a plinth in front of most Hindu temples
dedicated to Shiva, especially Southern temples.
He ofen sits in a dedicated columned pavilion known as a Nandi Mandapa and
is positoned so that he gazes in adoraton at Shiva within the main temple .
The bull is ofen dressed by worshippers with bells, clappers, and a necklace of
flowers.
A wish made in the ear of Nandi Bull, is usually fulflled – that’s the belief!
