1. eMARKS project
The project
The eMARKS project, co-funded by the European Commission (as part of the
eTEN Programme – Deploying Trans-European e-Services for all) and eight
partners from EU members was launched in September 2007. The project
duration is 18 months.
The objectives
The overall objective of embarks project is to market validate and initially deploy a
service that will optimise the trademark and industrial design protection by
offering a reliable, effective and adapted to the user real needs search service
based on images and augmented with natural language and multi-lingual
semantic indications on the categories of interest. eMAGE service allows users,
(such as IPR professionals, lawyers, SMEs, Public Services combating
counterfeiting crime such as Customs, Police, etc.), to identify similar trademarks
or industrial designs registered with EU industrial property offices.

The activities
Specifically, the objectives of the market validation and initial deployment
eMARKS project are:
♦ Test and validate the attractiveness of the eMAGE service based on the
existing technology – developed in the framework of eMAGE project between
2004-2006 – in term of application functionality, reliability and effectiveness at
EU25 and related countries level.
♦ Test and validate eMAGE service in terms of content collection, harmonisation
and enrichment procedure and implied costs by considering the peculiarities
of all EU25 IPOs databases.

2. ♦ Optimise and validate eMARKS business partnership in terms of revenue-
sharing Public-Private-Partnership models, roles and responsibilities.
♦ Validate the market size of potential users, the implied costs, and the most
appropriate pricing models per user type at EU25 and related countries level
and finally,
♦ Develop a realistic business and deployment plan based on experience drawn
from real life trials and other forms of market research at EU25 and related
country level.
