2. Introduction and Overview
• Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are an integral part of all
documentation of every clinical laboratory
• Standard operating procedures outlines all aspects of laboratory testing
including theory, methodology, procedures and all other important reference
material
• Specific operating procedures such as quality assurance, quality control and
safety are developed for every aspect of the laboratory
4. Challenges
• Procedure manuals must be kept up-to-date to comply local, state and
federal regulations
• All previous version should be kept in the record
• Amount of paperwork and number of hours can be enormous
• Since the manuals need to be distributed at several laboratory sections or
throughout the facility, they are often inaccessible to majority of the staff
• Or they are so inconveniently located that they are not regularly used

• Each user has a login ID and password to access the system
• Several level of users i.e. administrator, author, approver and reviewer
• Document authoring tools to create and convert existing documents
• Once a new document is approved and published, all user receive a
notification to review and sign off
• All the previous versions and change logs are maintained for future review
• Detailed log of all activities, i.e. who wrote, approved and review the
documents are kept
