This document compares small businesses and Fortune 500 companies in terms of their role in job creation in the US economy. It finds that while both play an important role, small businesses tend to create more net new jobs, especially during economic downturns when they are more nimble than large corporations in starting up new ventures. However, jobs created by small businesses may be of lower quality on average due to factors like lower pay and benefits. Overall, small businesses are shown to significantly contribute to the US economy through job creation.
