Boiler’s Mountings:
The items which are used for safety of boiler are called mountings.
• Water level indicator
• Pressure gauge
• Safety valves
• Fusible plug
• Blow-off cock
• Steam stop valve
• Feed check Valve
Boiler’s Accessories:
The items which are used for increasing the boiler efficiency. e.g., Super heater,
Economizer, Air pre-heater, etc.

Water level indicator:
• This is for indicating water level inside boiler
• Steel ball are provided to prevent loss of steam
6. 17 August 2022 6
Pressure gauge:
• Used to measure the pressure of steam inside the boiler
• Generally, of bourdon type
7. 17 August 2022 7
Safety valve:
• Releases steam outside of boiler in case of excess pressure. Types of safety
valves are:
• Dead weight
• Spring loaded
• Lever controlled
Dead weight
Spring loaded Lever controlled

Fusible Plug:
• Its function is to extinguish fire when water level in boiler falls below certain
limit
• Fusible material is having low melting point like brass
9. 17 August 2022 9
Blow off cock:
• Used to drain out water form boiler for internal cleaning, inspection or other
purposes
• Fitted at lowest part of boiler
10. 17 August 2022 10
Steam stop valve:
• Regulates the flow of steam
• By shutting off the flow of steam from boiler to steam pipe
• Or steam from steam pipe to engine
11. 17 August 2022 11
Feed check valve:
• To allow the feed water to pass into the boiler
• To prevent back flow of water from boiler in event of failure of feed pump
12. 17 August 2022 12
Boiler's safety measures:
• Equipment manufacturer’s instructions must be followed while operating
• Boiler Operator must Wear safety shoes and kit
• Boiler operator must be trained in safety & training program should be
maintained
• Effective exhaust ventilation must be provided to prevent air contamination
• Good housekeeping for safety and good plant operation
• Periodically check and maintain safety valves
• Periodic inspection of boilers must be done to detect problems
• Always wear hearing protection appropriate for high noise levels
• Extreme care must be exercised when making fuel-piping connections
• Leak check must be a part of maintenance program
16. 17 August 2022 16
Boiler's safety measures at start in steam boilers:
• Hydraulic should be carried out at a defined pressure before the start
• Check if the pump inlets are open at the start of a boiler
• Install an automatic ash removal system such as rotary valves in a boiler to
prevent the accumulation of ash in a furnace
• Pump priming must be done at the start of the boiler
• All loose connections must be checked
• A trained boiler operator must be hired for operating boiler
17. 17 August 2022 17
Boiler's safety measures carried out regularly:
• Never operate boiler above the design pressure and check for the safe operation
of Safety valves as well as fusible plugs.
• Regular cleaning of the perforated line is necessary
• Stainer must be installed before the pump
• Water must be treated before feeding it to the boiler
• Regular inspection and maintenance of boiler and its accessories and valves
• Make sure that the boiler vents are not restricted such as cloth etc.
• Always check for the leakages of steam, water, air and flue gases
• Follow boiler manual for safe and efficient working of your boiler
• Check if all the hot parts of the boiler are insulated
• Regularly check for greasing in all the movable parts for the ease of operation
• Pressure switch and Pressure Gauge should be checked
18. 17 August 2022 18
Boiler's safety measures carried out occasionally:
• Occasionally clean the boiler tubes to prevent any ash deposition. This
enhances efficiency and removes leakage problems
• Ratio of primary and secondary air must be maintained in accordance with fuel
feeding.
• Periodically check burner operation back pressure and line pressure to prevent
any thermal hazards.
