The BBFC has classified films in the UK since 1912 and videos/DVDs since 1984. It assigns ratings that determine whether and how a film can be viewed in the UK. There are several ratings including U for all ages, PG for ages 8+, 12A for ages 12+, 15 for ages 15+, and 18 for ages 18+. Higher ratings allow greater depictions of issues like sex, violence, and substance use. For example, a 15-rated film can contain moderate violence, nudity, language, and drug use while an 18-rated film has no restrictions other than illegality. The document discusses how a thriller film would likely receive a 15 or 18 rating depending on the level of such content included.

BBFC Film Certificate Ratings
1. CERTIFICATE RATINGS: THE BBFC
The BBFC(British board of film
classification) is a non governmental
body which has classified cinema films
even during 1912 and DVD’s/videos
after the 1984 recording act was
passed. The BBFC has the right to rate
the movies and ensure if they are
allowed to be watched within the UK.
2. Certificate Ratings
The universal symbol ‘U’ is rated for children 4+. significant issues like; drugs, sex,
violence, nudity and inimitable behaviour are not acceptable as they would influence
young kids in a negative way. although, the reaction of the child is unpredictable.
The parental guidance ‘PG’ system is suitable for children 8+. PG would
include mild issues like kissing but drugs, sex, violence & nudity are not
allowed as they still have bad influences towards kids.
12a is rated for 12+ and it contains a moderate amounts of issues like
kissing, smoking & mild violence. Mild language like ‘crap’ or ‘shit’
maybe be passed in a 12a film but parents may find 12a movies
inappropriate.
15 rated movies are not allowed for kids(only people aged 15+). A 15 rated
movie consists of moderate violence, mild nudity, strong language, taking of
drugs and discriminating behaviour.
18 is rated only for adults 18+. There are no prohibited theme and they are
acceptable as long as it is not illegal or no one is harmed. 18 rated film include
strong violence, language, sex/nudity, discrimination and drugs.
R18 rated films contain very strong pornographic themes and strong fetishes
that can only be shown in a special licensed cinema and sex shops.
3. Explanation
Looking at the certificate ratings has shown me that; a thriller would most
likely be a 15 rated to 18 rated film.Compared to a 18 rated film; a thriller
could rated a 15 as some thrillers like ‘the visit’ contain moderate amount of
issues like mild nudity, violence, discrimination and drugs. However some
thrillers like ‘Limitless’ are rated 18 as it contains strong language, nudity
and sex (the movie mostly focuses on drugs). Thrillers cannot be under any
rate from 15R as they can offensive and a bad influence towards young
children. I will make my thriller opening which is suitable for 15+ so it will be
a 15 rated opening.
