3. Responsibilities &
My General Experience
3
My responsibilities at the Paisano included writing articles for at least two sections of
the paper, interviewing individuals for my articles and distributing the newspaper on
campus.
My experience at the Paisano was a great one. The environment was both inviting and
challenging. I was expected to work hard, but I also had fun interacting with my peers and
discussing current issues and article topics. I felt like I was surrounded with like-minded
individuals at the Paisano.
The professionalism displayed by my peers was great and it made me feel like it was
not even a student-run paper. I am proud to say I worked at the Paisano. I would
recommend anyone who is interested in writing, advertising, graphic design or
illustration to participate.
I have included all of the articles I have written, which are a total of 12. The articles
were on both the News section and the Opinion section of the Paisano.
* The Summer article counts as 2 articles since it was considered a longer-than-
average article.

Hoverboards vs. Skateboards
Commentary

Published Jan. 26, 2016
This was my very first article. The
topic was assigned to me by my
managing editor Mia. I interviewed
UTSA PD for this article, and I gave
my opinion on the rules and
regulations of skateboards, as well
as my view on hoverboards.

Public Breastfeeding

I especially enjoyed writing this
article. My research on this topic
created a lot of positive and
negative emotions, and I feel like
it is a topic that garners a lot of
interest. I had classmates come
up to me to discuss both their
agreements and disagreements
on this article.

Veganism
Commentary

Published March 29, 2016
This article required a lot of contradicting
research findings, but in the end, I
decided that a vegan diet is a good diet
if it is done well. Writing this story made
me seriously consider adopting a vegan
diet due to health benefits, but I think my
love for meat, cheese and eggs is too
powerful to convert me.

PIVOT Program

PIVOT is a program that will
be coming to UTSA in the near
future. Although there is not set
date as to when it will begin,
I was assigned the story because
of its potential to benefit first
generation and Latino students.

Neuroscience Grant
News

Published Feb. 16, 2016
For this article, I interviewed
UTSA neuroscientist Dr. Paladini.
I’m interested in psychology and
the research that goes into it.
I also found this story to be a
potential as a ray of hope for
those who suffer from Parkinson’s
disease, depression and drug
addiction since there is an
incentive to create new
treatments and cures for
dopamine-related illnesses.

Campus Carry Survey
News

Published Feb. 23, 2016
This article was based on faculty
survey results on the campus carry
law. It was interesting to see how
truly concerned faculty were with
the new law and how they believed
it would affect their teaching
abilities. This article resulted in a
heated argument with a friend who
was pro-gun, and I must admit, it
was fun to lay him down with some
logic.

Recycle Mania

Published Mar. 8, 2016
This was a short article on Recycle
Mania, a yearly event and competi-
tion that aims to get universities and
colleges nationwide to recycle. Un-
fortunately, I cannot find a spread in
the newspaper.
*This article was already finished
and edited by April 26, but it was
saved to go into the Paisano’s
Special Edition.

3-D Bioprinter
News

Published April 5, 2016
For this article, I interviewed Dr. Teja
Guda, a biomedical engineering
professor, who has the bioprinter in
his laboratory. The 3-D bioprinter is
pretty special since it can potentially
print out organs and tissue in the
future. UTSA is the only Texas
university with this type of
technology.

Summer Courses &
Summer Salaries
News

Published April 26, 2016
This article was intended to be two
separate articles, but at the last
second my editor decided to
combine them to make one long
article on the upcoming summer.
The first part of the article talks
about the new ad campaign to get
more students to apply for summer,
and the second part talks about
faculty pay during the summer.
The pay cuts faculty gets in the
summer are awful.

Special Issue: Graduation

Published May 3, 2016
This was my last article and it
takes a look behind the scenes
of the commencement
ceremonies. For this story I
interviewed Pat Graham, the
Special Events Coordinator. She
gives great insight into past
ceremonies and how the
ceremonies are organized and
carried out.
