2. Indeed, it is more fun in the Philippines. Based on the 2017 data, the numbers are up for both domestic
and international tourism. It is a sure sign that people are spending more when they travel.
What the Information Says
According to the report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), both inbound and domestic
tourism expenditure increased.
Inbound tourism spending, for example, went up to more than PHP 448 billion. This, which was almost
a 45% increase from PHP 311 billion in 2016. That of domestic tourism, meanwhile, climbed from PHP
2.11 billion in 2016 to PHP2.6 billion the following year, which was an increase of 25.5%.
Both of these types of tourism have been helpful to the country’s economy. They provided almost PHP
2 billion of added-value to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). They also stimulated the
employment sector, with more than 5 million people in 2017.
3. Philippine tourism is also making headway in terms of international arrivals. From January to April 2018
alone, there were more than 2.5 million visitors, an increase of 12.4% compared to the previous year.
About 22% of these foreign tourists came from South Korea followed by China, the United States,
Japan, and Australia. Among the different markets, however, Philippine tourism saw the highest
increase among the Chinese. This segment grew a whopping 52% from January to April 2017 to 2018.
One of the reasons for the high influx of foreigners is the increased flights to strategic destinations.
Philippine Airlines, the official air carrier, for example, plans to serve 20 million passengers by 2021.
Philippine tourism, however, still has a long way to go in providing good-quality experience for visitors.
For instance, land connectivity can still be confusing. Fortunately, many projects are on the way such
as subways and expressways. Visitors can also count on a wider fleet of private vehicles available for
rent.
