For my phenology project, I decided to take a picture of the Murphey Square sign when I
am on my way to my Western Civilization class in the Kennedy building at Augsburg College at
around 11:45am on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. I hope to see some differences with the area
around the sign, like the melting of snow, the budding of the tree next to the sign, the weather
change, and hopefully some signs of animal activity. My temperature and other recordings come
from Weather Underground Minneapolis.
Today, the temperature at 11:45am was -3 with a windchill of -16.3 and the dew point at
-11. There was a 10mph wind from the west. It was very clear and sunny. The humidity was at
66%.
I did see signs of squirrel tracks going towards a tree while walking through the park. I
did not see any signs of any birds or any other wildlife. There were quite a few people walking
around outside. It felt very nice outside today due to the sun being out.
February 11, 2014
Today, due to my job working at ResLife, I was 15 minutes late taking my picture.
The temperature today at 12:00 was 6.1 with a wind chill of -11.5 and the dew point at -
4. There was a 10.4 mph wind from the southeast. There was scattered clouds and the humidity
was 69%.
I did not see or hear any wildlife today, but I did hear a bird singing the day before. There
were also quite a few people walking outside. While walking, I noticed how very slippery the
path to the Kennedy building was; it was more slippery than usual. A sign of a high temperature
on a previous day and then it getting very cold the next and freezing what melted of the snow
and thus making it extra
slippery.
February 13, 2014
The temperature today at 11:45 it was 19.9 with a wind chill of 3.5 and a dew point of
14.0. The wind had a speed of 21.9 mph coming from the west. It was cloudy with some light
snowfall. The humidity was at 78%.
You can tell from this picture that there was slight snowfall between Tuesday and
Thursday.
February 18, 2014
Temperature today was 37.9 with a wind chill of 33.5 and a dew point of 23.0. The wind
was at a speed of 4.6 mph coming from the south. It was mostly cloudy with humidity at 57%.
You can see in the picture that there was snowfall over the weekend due to the snow on
the roofs of the cars in the background.
February 20, 2014
The temperature
today was 33.1 with a wind chill of 26.9 and a dew point of 33.1. The wind speed was 6.9 mph
coming from north-by-
northeast. There was light
rain starting 11:00AM this
morning. The humidity was
100%.
Even though it was rainy, it was fairly nice outside during this time on my way to class.
The ground was a little slippery though.
February 25, 2014
Temperature today
was 3.9 with a wind chill of -
11.3 and a dew point of -
8.0. The wind speed was 10.4 mph coming from the west. It was clear with no precipitation. The
humidity was 58%.
In the picture you can see that we did have some snowfall over the weekend because of
the snow on the cars. The snow level on the sign is still at about the same level as when I
started on February 6.
February 27,
2014
The
temperature was at -
4.0 with wind chill
being undetermined
and a dew point of -
20.9. Wind speed was
classified as calm with no direction. There were scattered clouds with no precipitation. The
humidity was 44%.
This was taken after a big snowfall between Tuesday and Thursday. You can see the
new powdered layer in the background on the mounds of snow.
March 4, 2014
Temperatu
re today was 16.0 with a
wind chill of 5.3 and a
dew point of 7.0. The
wind speed was 8.1 mph
coming from north-by-
northeast. It was overcast
with no precipitation. The
humidity was at 68%.
Coming into March, it was fairly nice. Cloudy but not too bad. The pathway on my way to
class was pretty icy.The snow level on the sign was still at the same level at this point. I am
starting to wonder if this spring is going to be like last years spring.
March 6, 2014
On this day I completely forgot to take a picture on my way to class, but I still got the
weather information.
The temperature this day was at 11:45 was 29.1 with a windchill of 8.2 and a dew point
of 16.0. The wind speed was 16.1 mph with the direction being from south-by-southeast. It was
an overcast with no precipitation. The humidity was 78%.
March 11, 2014
Temperature today was 39.0 with a windchill of 32.3 and a dew point of 27.0. The wind
speed was 10.4 mph with direction coming from the north. It was overcast with no precipitation.
The humidity was 62%.
You can really see that the snow is melting in this picture. The level around the sign has
gone down.
March 13, 2014
The temperature
was 39.2 with a windchill
of 33.6 and a dew point
of 32.0. The wind speed
and direction were 8.1
mph from the southwest.
It was clear with no
precipitation. The
humidity was 75%.
You can see by
comparing this picture
and March 11th’s
picture, the spots of
grass spotted on March
11th are now covered up again by snow.
March 18 & 20, 2014
This week I went home for spring break.
For March 18, 2014 the temperature was 35.1 with a windchill of 26.4 and a dew point of
24.1. The wind speed and direction were 12.7 mph east-by-southeast. It was overcast with no
precipitation but there was snow earlier that morning at 8:00AM. The humidity was 64%.
For March 20, 2014 the temperature was 37.9 with a windchill of 34.4 and a dew point of
28.9. The wind speed was 4.6 mph coming from the southwest. There were scattered clouds
with no precipitation. The humidity was 70%.
March 25, 2014
The
temperature was
18.0 with a
windchill of 4.8 and
a dew point of 1.0.
The wind speed
was 12.7 mph from
north-by-northwest.
There were
scattered clouds
with no precipitation
but there was some
snow ending at
1:00AM that
morning.
For this picture, more grass is showing around the sign and around the trees. There were nice
big puddles on the sidewalk on my way to class.
March 27, 2014
The
temperature was 37.0
with a windchill of 30.4
and a dew point of
37.0. The wind speed
and direction were 9.2
mph from the
southeast. It was
cloudy with light
drizzling. The humidity
was 100%.
You can see even
more snow has melted
away from underneath
the sign and also behind it.
April 1, 2014
The temperature for April 1st was 27.0 with a windchill of 13.5 and a dew point of 17.1.
The wind and direction were 19.6 mph from the west. It was mostly cloudy with no precipitation
but there was snowfall that ended at about 10:30AM. The humidity was 66%.
By this
point in the picture
there is no more
snow on the
ground especially
with the snowfall
that happened
earlier that
morning. It is
really nice to not
see the snow on
the ground. I did
also check on the
trees to see if any
budding had
started but none
had.
April 3, 2014
The temperature this day was 34.0 with a windchill of 23.0 and a dew point of 28.0. The
wind speed was 18.4 mph coming from east-by-northeast. It was overcast with no precipitation
but there was rain
that ended at
around 6:15AM.
The humidity was
79%.
There is now not
even ice on the
sidewalks. On this
day, we were in a
winter storm
advisory until the
next day. During
this evening we
were expected to
get 6-14 inches of
snow.
The top graph is the monthly Minneapolis high and low temperatures from January
through the beginning of April. The red represents record highs, green represents the average,
and blue represents record lows. The bottom green graph shows Minneapolis’ monthly
precipitation in inches. You can see that this winter/spring it was, on average, colder that it has
been in past years.
