Reduce costs
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. By contributing to RISSB’s development process, the cost of
developing in-house standards, codes, rules and guidelines will be significantly reduced. Smaller
businesses will become more efficient by using the products that are developed by industry
experts.
Improve safety
By reducing the number of different industry practices, our products have proven they can
enhance safety levels in the industry. Providing key standards for priority safety areas, such as
level crossings, work on track and wheel rail interface, has increased safety performance in many
jurisdictions. Plus, we are continuously developing new products to meet industry’s need to
enhance safety.
Improve productivity
By having unrestricted access to our products, you will be able to more easily comply with
regulatory requirements, demonstrate due diligence and compliance with your duty of care, and
more readily achieve best practice. This will improve your organisation’s productivity, because
using RISSB’s products reduces red-tape, and therefore cost, especially when dealing with multiple
organisations.
Common industry benchmarks
Because of the exacting, accredited and audited process we follow to develop our products, they
have the status of best practice for the rail industry.
We have created industry benchmarks that enable a more robust industry standard, and provide a
measure of protection to rail operators following incidents.
Separation of standard development and
usage
Because the standards development and implementation bodies are separated, using our
products helps remove the potential for conflict of interest and also enhances transparency in your
organisation.

Product Development Process
The RISSB product development process demands that we
work closely with industry stakeholders. To achieve this, we
maintain close working relationships with the ARA, Standards
Australia, Rail Tram and Bus Union, various federal and state
governments, the National Transport Commission, and the
National Rail Safety Regulator.
Independent authors write RISSB products. The author works
with a RISSB Project Manager and Development Group to
ensure that the product is acceptable to industry. Drafts are
then released to industry for comment and reviewed by the
author.
All final products are independently reviewed by a validator.
The final validated draft is then passed to the relevant RISSB
Standing Committee who oversees the development of each
product and ensures that proper governance and process is
followed.
Once approved by the RISSB Standing Committee, the
document is passed to the Development Advisory Board
(DAB) for endorsement to assure the accredited process has
been followed. Once endorsed, the DAB seeks publishing
approval from RISSB’s Board.
A message from the
General Manager
The RISSB works collaboratively with the Australian rail industry to harmonise
safety practices across the country.
As Australia’s largest industry-based standards-development organisation, our
products are leading the Australian rail industry to a future of reduced costs,
increased safety and improved customer satisfaction.
Developed by the industry for the industry, RISSB standards, codes of practice,
rules, guidelines and handbooks are enabling the Australian rail industry to
overcome a 150 year legacy of different technologies, standards and safety
practices.
Accredited by Standards Australia, we follow a stringent standard development
process that draws on industry subject-matter experts to ensure we deliver the
best solutions for rail.
The RISSB’s success in delivering valuable tools for industry is demonstrated
through the increasing adoption of our products throughout the rail industry.
This booklet provides an overview of RISSB and our products. For more
information or to get involved, visit our website www.rissb.com.au or contact a
