The morphing of science and psychology is brought into this hybrid home of Broadmoor Louisiana. It speaks to the reaction of the community, the desire to preserve the integrity of the architecture. With an overlapping pitched roof and prominent connection to the street the curb appeal of this home is made to blend into the existing architectural context. The long narrow site provided opportunity to integrate each connecting room with a simple 90 degree angle. The play of this shifting angle throughout allows for economical construction and provides intimacy of space. It is a horizontal and vertical composition of materials and light. The exterior façade is a contrast of warm and cool materials, a venetian plastered stucco with horizontal reveals wrapping around the house embracing the central heart of the home, the main entrance. Glowing in a warm wood and protected by an overhanging roof it is the destined place to be welcoming friends and family inside. As we age we develop sensitivities to light, colors, and textures. The design intent is to celebrate the comfort in these changes. The interior is layered with indirect light, most of which comes from the east facing windows at the roof. As the sun goes down the lighting remains present with various switching dynamics in recessed lights, wall mounted fixtures and task lighting. This layering effect provides a comforting environment and is sustainable in approach. The interior colors are contrasting and simple that is known to be soothing to the aging eye. Floor textures are slightly rough enough to cause friction and are fairly non reflective in shine. The generous width in corridors and doors are suitable to clear a walker and or wheelchair if necessary. The indoor outdoor quality is shared with two decks that are accessible from either the front or the back of the house. As one ages the ability to use stairs may be difficult and having a first floor at 7’-0” above grade limits accessibility. The use of adjacent patios allows the user to easily access the outdoors. For elders that have become too frail to use stairs entirely a residential grade elevator lift may be installed. This space can be transformed into a storage closet if the owners do not need a lift to access the ground. The driveway consists of eco-turf pavers that will limit the landscape cover and guide the user into the wide open living space to the outdoors. Fully protected by the floor above openings are strategically placed to allow a comforting cool breeze to pass through. For more private gatherings the sliding barn doors can enclose the west façade. To access the backyard a set of pavers are placed as visual direction. This house is more than just a living dwelling; it is a place that welcomes friends and family. It welcomes the healthy environment and protects from threatening conditions. It is a home to preserve the memories of the past and be in the present. The new hybrid home of the heart is where renewing of life begins.
