Cover Letter for Physiologist with PhD
1. COVER LETTER
Liselotte Pihl
My name is Liselotte Pihl and I have a PhD in physiology from Uppsala University. I was born in
Avesta but moved to Uppsala 1996 to start my higher education. During my first years at the
University, I studied biology but my interest for physiology grew, and the rest of my education was
devoted to gain more knowledge in this area.
For almost two years I held a temporary position at Safety Assessment, AstraZeneca, where I
functioned as a Study Director. In this role, I have performed Safety Pharmacology Telemetry Studies
in vivo in dogs and thereby learnt a lot when it comes to analyzing cardiovascular parameters in
general and ECG in particular. During my time at the AstraZeneca, I have also gained a good insight
in management of a large company and not least the development of pharmaceuticals.
After several years of studying basic physiological functions, it has been of great experience to use my
knowledge. However, science called me back and for two years I possessed a post-doc position at the
Division of Integrative Physiology, Department of Medical Cell Biology, Uppsala University. The
area of interest became the kidney and I was yet again back to hands-on research. I remained the
connection with patient benefit by focusing on how diabetes and hypertension affect kidney function.
My research group moved to Linköping University and I was positioned as principal research engineer
at the Department of Medical and Health Sciences. The research area remained the kidney and
diabetes, but my tasks was extended to include head responsibility for the laboratory activities and
introduction and supervision of new co-workers.
One of my strength is my experience of in vivo experiments and my surgery skills. During my years as
a researcher I have worked with several different animal models using rats and mice to investigate
intestine or kidney function. I have also been responsible for the breeding of a transgenic nNOS
knock-out mouse strain in Uppsala. I have great experience of surgical procedures, including
catheterisation of veins and arteries, including the tiny lumbar artery, tracheostomy, preparation of the
bile duct and the intestine, implantation of telemetry-probes and the “kidney-in-a-cup” preparation
which includes catheterization of the urethra. I have also worked with radioactive labelled markers
such as 51Cr-EDTA, 14
C-PAH and 3H-inulin to study the physiology of the intestines and kidneys.
As a surgeon I have managed very well, probably due to my great patience, sense for details and my
ability to keep calm in most situations. As a PhD-student I have learned to work independently and to
critically review my own results. Nevertheless, I like to cooperate in groups. I have an analytical mind
and I am used to present my results to others.
At Uppsala University I got the opportunity to teach a number of courses which I greatly appreciates. I
have also had the administrative responsibility for “Humanfysiologi C” at Uppsala University. When I
got my position at Linköping University, the laboratory was under construction. As the principal
research engineer I was deeply involved in the process of building and organizing the lab.
Finally, my big interest in life is scuba diving, in Swedish and foreign waters. Being a diver has given
me a lot. I have met the most extraordinary people and experienced nature at its best. Traveling around
the world has also evolved an interest in photography. Nowadays I combine my interest by bringing
the camera under water. Furthermore, I have recently started to experience wall climbing and next step
is to bring this new hobby outdoors. The real challenge seems to be to find a proper cliff in the flatness
of Östergötland.
Yours sincerely,
Liselotte
