6. Compliance with medication and
prescription drug addiction
Proactively ask how people are feeling and know what to
say if they answer ‘not well’, etc , discuss signs of side
effects that you may notice,
Watch for addiction/use by family members and friends
E.g the child minder using the Concerta, using medications
to control young/old people in the family- even the animals!
Ask about use of recreational drugs and any positive effects
of their prescribed medication that service users talk about
Remember that sometimes the service user may have
developed their own way of taking meds whichmat not seen
logical but works for them.

7. Important Points to think of
What to do in a crisis- who to call, what to do, what to
expect to happen
Have you ever visited an acute psychiatric ward? Do you
have any lived experience yourself? Service users often
value this.
Be alert to eating disorders - are they buying a lot of senna/
diet pills? Blisters on hands etc
Be alert to perinatal mental health issues- and know what
to do if you suspect there may be a problem
Safeguarding issues-domestic violence, elder abuse,
children, forced marriage, even FGM
Mental health awareness training for staff- mental health
Lite or MINDeD on line training developed by Young Minds.
