2. Management Theme
Postdoc spirit: Willingness to explore, continuous
growth/learning as a team and as an individual.
Classical Software Engineer spirit: Establish
processes/operations, software engineering
cycle/methodology, long-term software solutions.
'Roll-up sleeves' manager: has performed or can perform
almost all of the duties in his facility.
Complement the PIs/directors: Overlap, not duplicate.
Accesible & Approachable.
Transparent.
3. First 100 Days
Well...first 3-6 months.
Fill gaps in personal background as needed.
Master common tasks' requirements & the different
scientific problems' categories.
Individual meetings with involved faculty: learning their
needs.
As time permits: Attend seminars, selective lab group
meetings, lab tours.
4. First 100 Days (Contd)
Task 1 starts in week 1.
Laying the grounds for a 'long-term project' starts by week
4 or earlier.
Team building: Starting with one additional team member.
Six months milestone: An assessment of what was done,
and what will be done, transparent to all.
5. Service Role
Satisfy requests/short-term tasks from scientists.
Significantly relying on existing tools.
Behind the scenes tasks: If reasonable, build reusable
software components/processes.
Components may evolve in user tools, allowing more
independence for the scientists.
Provide training as/when needed.
Relying on online tools like Atlassian (wiki, JIRA), Google,
and others.
6. Longer Term Projects
Collaborations on publications and/or
Long term impact bioinformatics software products.
Percentage of involvement to be determined.
Provides a deeper sense of achievement for the unit and
the program.
7. Visibility
Visible as one of the major Canadian Bioinformatics Core
Facilities, despite our infancy.
Attending meetings & Conferences, if possible.
Participating/sharing experiences with other Bioinformatics
core facilities.
