2. The Atomium is a
structure 103 metres
high.
It’s an iconic building
with nine balls made of
glass united by metalic
tubes.
It’s made of steel and
aluminium, it represents
an iron crystal.
3. The structure was designed by the architect
André Waterkeyn for the top General Exhibition
in Brussels. It was planned to stay for 6 months,
but quickly became a tourist attraction.
4. Atomium conducted a
renewal process that
started in March 2004.
Before the
renewal, Atomium was 2
metres long, but after
the renewal Atomium
became a giant
sculpture.
There are offices and
restaurants in the glass
balls.
5. Atomium has become an
important symbol of the
capital of Belgium
(Brussels) next to other
famous monuments like:
Manneken Pis and Grand
Palace.
