Absence management
Getting sick and many other reasons can be used in filing a leave of absence. However, there are
instances in which employees are being irresponsible in availing leave. Obviously, if many employees are
on leave most likely it will affect the productivity at the same time add burdens and costs to the
company. The good thing is that there’s an effective way to address such issue through the absence
management program.
This approach is designed to provide helpful solutions on how the employers can manage the
employee’s absences. Whether the leave of absence is short-term or long-term, still it impacts the
company. This makes sense of understanding how absence management can help.
How absence management helps the company
Statutory sick pay, occupational sick pay, temporary cover, sickness absence and paying overtime can
cause direct cost to the company. In In addition, there are other effects if a company is unable to handle
and manage properly the absences of the employees.
• If frequent absences are not dealt with properly, there’s a great chance that it will lower the
morale of other employees. The absence of an employee can affect the workflow in such a way that
another staff will cover up or do the task of the absent employee.
• The absence of an employee can lead to mistakes particularly if the other person who covers up
the job isn’t knowledgeable about the task. The worse thing is that committing mistakes can jeopardize
the relationships among the employees.
• Absence can also impact the productivity of an employee and the company as a whole. It’s
because it can delay the completion of a project and the inconsistency of the team, thus drop off the
production.
Likewise, if an employee is frequently absent, it can also demotivate other employees. That’s why it’s
important for a business to know how to manage the absences of the employees to avoid those
scenarios cited above.
Since getting sick is the most common reason, the company should do some measures on how to avoid
and prevent their employees from getting sick. By, providing wellness and health referrals, employees
can have the chance to have regular executive checkup. This way minor health issues can be addressed
immediately before the condition worsen and prevent you from reporting for work.
According to surveys, most Human Resource officers stated that implementing absence management is
a strategic approach that can help an organization to address the potential issues brought by the
absences of the employees.
However, the key to managing the employees’ absences is by monitoring the absences and discussing it
with the employees. Thus, a Human Resource officer should be knowledgeable why the employees are
committing absences. Once you know the root cause, then it would be easier to rule out the solution.
Keen monitoring of the absences of the employees can prevent them from being absent most of the
time.
Therefore, if you are facing the issues of frequent employees’ absences, then you should start
implementing some measures on absence management before it’s too late.
