Champions are Made
When No One is Watching
As we move into the cold New England winter, the
team is now practicing inside. We will not be racing
again until spring but we will be focusing on our
training. The team will go off the grid for a few months
and this is a perfect time to become champions with
mental toughness and perseverance. We have plans to
do BIG things come spring and these winter months are
the most important.

Welcome to
the Winter!
Hello everyone! Can you
believe that it is already
December? Well believe it
or not, I would like to
welcome you to the Rhode
Island Women’s Rowing
Winter Newsletter.
I want to tell you about how
the fall finished out with our
freshman racing, fun tips for
the holidays, our
community service, and a
little inside scoop with some
of the girls.
Thank You and Enjoy,
Leah McGlynn
This is an indoor 2000-meter sprint competition on
the ergs in Boston, MA. This is an extremely fun
event that brings the team together for
competition and gives us a good look at the teams
that we will compete against in the spring.
Registration is now open at

Serving our Community
Canned Food Drive
The canned food drive is a traditional
community service project that our team
participates in every year. We collect non-
perishable items such as canned vegetables,
canned beans, peanut butter, and jelly. We
then donate the food the Johnny Cakes in
Wakefield, RI.
Yards for Yeardley
In honor of a University of Virginia senior,
Yeardley Love, Rhode Island Athletics came
together to run 1 Million yards. This was done to
raise awareness of domestic violence in her
memory and her tragic story of being the victim
of domestic violence.
The Spirit of Giving
Amber Abderrazzaq is a sophomore on the
rowing team from Auburn, MA. She led our
team in the community service project, “The
Spirit of Giving.” She learned of this project
because she is a Civic Engagement Leader on
campus. These Leaders run various community
service projects for URI students to participate in
through the Feinstein Experience. “The Spirit of
Giving,” gives people the opportunity to support
a family in need for the Holidays. Our team set
out and bought different yet simple items that
catered to our specific family’s needs such as
clothes, hats, gloves, toys, and gift cards.

Gifts for a Rower
The holiday season is right around the corner and getting together your last minute
gifts can get tricky. Have no fear because here are some ideas for all of your dear
rowers.
Pogies
An odd name yet powerful
tool. As New England rowers,
we use these to keep our
hands warm as we row next to
frosty the snowman in the
early spring.
Healthy Winter Treats
As we start to pack on our extra winter warmth, it is always nice to have a healthy treat.
Here are two delicious smoothies that incorporate the winter fruits in their best combinations.
Pomegranate, Pink
Grapefruit, and Beet
Smoothie
1 Cup pomegranate
juice
½ Cup whole milk greek
yogurt
2 small cooked beets
2 small pink grapefruits
peeled, seeded, and
sectioned
2 Tablespoons honey
1 Cup crushed ice
Pear, Oat, and Maple
Smoothie
1 Cup Vanilla oat milk
1 Cup Whole milk greek
yogurt
2 ripe pears, cored and
sliced
1 pinch cinnamon
2 Tablespoons maple
syrup
1 Cup crushed ice
Massage
With our competitive training
schedule, our bodies can get
pretty tired and knotted. A trip
to a professional masseuse
can do a rower wonders.
Spandex
We always need spandex;
I mean we practically live
in it. Any kind of spandex
can make a perfect gift.
Shorts, pants, long sleeves,
and to add something
extra to the list: wool socks.

Meet the Captains
“Speak softly and carry a big stick, you will go far.”
These were once the words of one of our country’s greatest
leaders, Theodore Roosevelt. As our captains may not have
to lead the United States of America, they certainly take on
a difficult job of leading our team. Having distinct leadership
roles they were selected by the team and now they guide
us in competition toward a goal. With them by our sides, we
hope to eventually release our aggression and go far.
Lily Herberger
Lily is a senior originally from California but now
resides in Rhode Island. With family history in rowing,
she continues the legacy as she finishes her forth year
on the Rhode Island Women’s Rowing team. She
pushes our team as she has earned Atlantic 10
Second Team All-Conference honors last year as a
junior in the Varsity 8 boat.
Marisa Landry
Marisa is a senior from Concord, NH. With former
experience on her high school team as a competitive
rower and a captain, she stepped onto this team as a
leader. She powers our team with an impressive record of
competing in Rhode Island’s top Varsity 8 in every
championship since she was a freshman.
Alissa Margraf
Alissa is a senior from Cherry Hill, NJ. As a coxswain
with prior high school rowing experience she acts as
both motivation, and coaching on the water and
the ergs. She drives our team with outstanding
academic records and a highly competitive
attitude as she has raced in the second Varsity 8 for
two consecutive years.

Final Fall Race Results
Our freshman and novice wrap up the fall racing with two great finishes for both boats in
the Green Monster and the Foot of the Charles.
The Green Monster
Rhode Island A: Finished 4th with a time of 17:54.4. Overall 3rd fastest team
Rhode Island B: Finished 8th with a time of 19:08.3. Overall 3rd fastest team
This raced combined the times of each school’s top two boats and then determined the
overall fastest team from the results. As a team, the freshman and novice came together to
place 3rd out of 6 teams. They came in right behind Dartmouth and Boston College and
beat University of Massachusetts, University of Vermont, and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
The Foot of the Charles
Rhode Island A: Finished 4th with a time of 15:30.3.
Rhode Island B: Finished 9th with a time of 17:08.5.
The race was held on untraditional sections of the Charles River due to wind conditions.
