Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. El lector mixto, o cuando el
papel convive con el e-book
Lejos del reemplazo de un formato por otro, lo común es que cada uno se utilice para
lecturas diferentes
2. En la 39a. Feria del Libro, que se realizo el 27 de abril de 2013, La Rural, Grammata
Argentina, empresa especializada en el diseño y la fabricación de dispositivos de
lectura digital y la edición y comercialización de contenidos, hizo eco del lema elegido
para ese año, "Los libros como puentes", para acompañar con ese concepto su
intención de transmitir la convivencia del libro tradicional con los nuevos dispositivos
digitales y libros electrónicos.
"La experiencia del primer año en la Feria era que nos estábamos metiendo en la boca
del lobo, se pensaba que hablar de digital era hablar de no imprimir más libros -contó
Ignacio Pinto Falcone, gerente de Operaciones de Grammata-. Para nuestra sorpresa,
en cambio, las editoriales se interesaron enseguida en este nuevo paradigma de lectura.
No quisieron perderse un negocio incipiente y en crecimiento. Y hoy la convivencia es un
hecho.“
En la Argentina, sin embargo, los lectores en papel son aún amplia mayoría.
Especialmente si se habla de libros. Así lo indicó la última Encuesta Nacional de Hábitos
de Lectura 2011, realizada por el Consejo Nacional de Lectura: el 67% respondió que
lee libros sólo en papel, mientras que el 7% aseguró hacerlo tanto en papel como en
pantalla y sólo un 1% en pantalla.
A partir de esos resultados la encuesta concluyó que el reemplazo del libro en papel por
el libro digital es prácticamente nulo, avalando así la teoría de la convivencia de ambos.
3. Daniela Parra (26) se declaró una
amante del libro en papel, en total
desacuerdo con lo digital. "Esa cosa
tangible de un libro, el olor de las
hojas... no se puede comparar. Lo que
lees no te llega de la misma manera -
dijo-. No es lo mismo terminar una
historia dándole un clic a una cruz que
leer una última página y cerrar el
libro."
Micaela Dupuy (21) a ella ni se le pasó
por la cabeza detenerse en los
sectores de las Tablet. ¿Por qué?
Porque le resulta más cómodo el papel
para leer, y por un tema de seguridad:
no se imagina con el ebook en un
colectivo o en un vagón del tren.

4. Daniela Morel, de la editorial
Random House Mondadori, dijo que
la tendencia al consumo y los
intereses de lectura de quienes leen
ebooks son los mismos de quienes
compran libros físicos, tanto en
ficción como en no ficción: "Los
hábitos de lectura tienen que ver
con cada persona, algunos lectores
prefieren los ebooks por comodidad
(tienen un libro enorme comprimido
en un dispositivo) o porque son más
tecnológicos. Otros prefieren el
papel porque les gusta más, pero
pueden convivir con ambas cosas".
5. Pinto Falcone, en tanto, se refirió a
ciertas áreas técnicas donde el
contenido digital resuelve esa ecuación
de tener todo a mano al mismo tiempo
sin dejar de estar actualizados.
Abogados que llevan comprimidos todos
los códigos en unos megas o médicos
que localizan el material sobre una
determinada patología con un par de
clics en la Tablet son algunos de los
ejemplos que citó. Por eso, en
Grammata, ya distinguen dos
categorías de lectores digitales: el
técnico/profesional, a quien le resulta
mucho más cómodo, fácil y barato este
formato, y el netamente novelero, que
sigue las tendencias de títulos de
moda.
6. Los hábitos y los más leídos
¿Cuántos libros leen los argentinos anualmente? Sergio Vázquez sostuvo que el promedio
de un lector estándar es de un libro al mes, es decir, entre doce y quince anualmente.
"Algo notorio es que cuando un lector se pasa a un dispositivo electrónico, se optimizan
los tiempos y terminan leyendo más. Un lector compulsivo llega a cinco libros al mes",
dijo. En cuanto a qué tipo de libros leen esos lectores digitales que no entran en la
categoría de "técnico/profesional", según una encuesta que realizaron en su fanpage en
Facebook, los géneros más votados resultaron las biografías e historias reales, luego las
historias de amor y en tercer lugar la ficción.
Aunque si se remiten a las ventas, Vázquez aclara que el género líder es el de las
"novelas eróticas" como la trilogía Cincuenta Sombras de Grey y los libros de historia y
romance de Florencia Bonelli.
