Last Holiday;Lose Everything To Gain It All
The film Last Holiday starring Queen Latifah is about a shy, boring woman named
Georgia Byrd who works at a department store. She does everything by the book. She eats right,
she is a good servant for the church, and she is very nice to a little boy who is her neighbor. She
imagines doing things that she would never do, so to keep it alive she writes in a book
everythingthat she wants to do, and all the people she wants to meet. It is one man that she has a
big crush on that works with her named Sean. One day, he comes up to her to ask her out but
backs out. They started to talk anyway, and with her being so nervous she dropseverything she
was holding, and when she came up she hit her head on an open cupboard door which causesher
to pass out.(Sean then takes her to themedical department on their job to the Dr. Gupta). The
doctor recommends a CT scan (CAT scan). Her boss complains that the cost of it is too high but
the doctor tells him he had purchased a used one. Once the doctor looked the results and saw she
had dots on her brain he didnโt believe it was right, so he did another one. Afraid to bring the bad
news to her he tells her that she has a disease called Lampingtonโsand she has three weeks left to
live. After a lot of thinking she decided to live the life she always dreamed of living, and just
started blowing all of her life savings. At the end of the film Georgia finds out that she does not
have a brain disease, and she will not die. This film demonstrates that relying on technology can
fail at any time. Even if double checked, it is still no guarantee that it is accurate. Although I

agree that technology isnโt reliable, I do agree that it is a big help for the world especially for
medical purposes.
Itโs a known fact that it saves plenty lives and still is. Technology is the kind of situation
where you have to take the good with the bad. In the beginning of the film we see where the Dr.
Gupta thinks that the test maybe wrong so he does it again. That shows that doctors arenโt always
accepting what the results from medical machines say. Being that the doctor did the test twice he
felt that it was right. With the news effecting Georgia she Started questioning God โwhy me? I
followed your commandments Lord, why me?โ I completely understand how she would feel
getting that type of news it would be upsetting, but technology isnโt one hundred percent
accurate. For example in my home my smoke detector would go off when itโs to smoky in the
house, and sometimes it will go off for no reason at all causing a false alarm. Although it upsets
me for going off for no reason it also makes me feel safe to have it in my home when Iโm asleep.
Another example is last month I scheduled a doctorโs appointment in my phoneโs calendar. The
night before the appointment I didnโt charge my phone so as I was leaving the house I couldnโt
remember the time of the appointment. I ended up being an hour late because my phone was
dead, and I couldnโt call or check to see the time I was scheduled for.
Furthermore,I agree that physicians would think that this high technology for medical
purposes would be accurate and sufficient or otherwise they wouldnโt use it, and at the same
time, physicians are very intelligent themselves so itโs a chance that we are going to have to take.
At the end of the film, the doctor uses the CT scan on himself and had the same exact spots on his
brain that Georgia did, and realizes that he had a bad machine. Giving her this false information
helps her and hinders her all at the same time. (It hinders her because she spent all of her savings,
and went through a depressing state questioning God on why he would let this happen to her. It

helped her by letting her live her life to the fullest, by enjoying it more. She got the love of her
life. He flew across country to be with her and let her know about how much he cared for her).
Although I must say technology could cause a big issue, I still agree that it is very helpful for the
world today. While some will argue that technology is unreliable I believe everyone who is able
will still use it. These kind of inventions are being created every day, and eventually thatโs all we
will be using is technology.
Overall Last Holiday is a good film that demonstrates how much doctors rely on this
machine or any medical machine. I completely agree that technology can have faulty defects but
I donโt think the world could make it without it. In this case itโs taking the good with the bad.
