2. What is SMS?
SMS is a Short Messaging Service. As the name implies, it is just a short text that
organizations can send to their audience for simple, easy communication.
3. ● Can be in response to an
opt-in
● Can be a bulk text
● Can also be a peer to peer
conversation

5. What is MMS?
MMS stands for Multimedia messaging service. It is one of the effective marketing
methods that allows organizations to communicate with a large group of audience via
images and videos.
10. Difference in Content-type
● MMS allows you to send text and links along with multimedia (images, gifs, videos, and pdf).
● SMS can send texts and links only.
11. Difference in Character limit
● MMS allows you to have 1600 characters in a single message
● SMS in contrast has only 160 characters per message
12. Difference in Costs
● MMS costs 3X more than SMS, because sending media-rich files are expensive!
● SMS in contrast is cheaper as it does not use as much bandwidth to send texts.
13. Major challenges
● MMS can have rendering difficulties as they may not be compatible with all devices
● SMS might not pique interest and so may not be as engaging as a text with an image or video
14. Difference in usage
● In 2013, the total MMS volume was over 96 billion
● In 2013, the volume of text messages was 2.19 trillion
15. TCPA regulations
Both SMS and MMS need explicit written consent from the consumer before businesses can reach out to them.
16. Advantages of SMS Messages
● Since SMS can have only text (and has a character limit), the texts are easily consumable without much mental
energy
● SMS are of course, cheaper than MMS - while still conveying the point
● SMS can reach a wider audience (70% of cellphone users use it for texting) - even those whose mobile phones
do not allow MMS texts.
17. Disadvantages of SMS Messages
● There will be times when adding images and videos are better for conversion. In such cases, SMS clearly will not
help.
● Similarly, texts are limited to a 160 character limit - making it tough to expand on a point.
18. Advantages of MMS Messages
MMS clearly overcomes the disadvantages of SMS
● It allows rich media to be embedded - thus being more attention-grabbing and conducive to conversion
● It also has a higher character limit (1600)- allowing you to offer more information in a single text
19. Disadvantages of MMS Messages
In contrast, MMS falls short where SMS has clear strengths
● MMS costs more
● MMS images and media may not be received by a lot of your audience (their device may not be compatible with
getting rich-media texts)
● MMS needs you to hire a resource to design eye-catching graphics (videos too) that can be sent. And this too will
add to your costs.
