5. The
Trek
Onwards towards mysteries of drowned skeletons:
Roopkund is a small glacial lake nestled just below the Trishul massif. It has been a draw
for trekkers, geologists and anthropologists alike for it is shrouded in mystery. The
Roopkund lake though shallow has hundreds of human remains, mostly skeletons,
immersed in it. The reason behind them being there is largely unexplained and several
theories are abound, one of which states that these were pilgrims on a yatra that got
caught in bad weather and drowned in the lake. One thing that is known, after years of
research, is that these remains are very old, most scientists put their date of drowning at
around 850 AD (give or take a few decades).
Lohajung – Didina
The trail leads through a mixed Rhododendron, Oak and Pine forest and the walk leads
you past and across several quaint streams. Those with a practiced eye and a love for bird
watching will not be disappointed as this area offers a gold mine of Himalayan birds for
the appreciative to admire and photograph.
The final climb up to Didina can get taxing if you are not accustomed to walking in the
hills. However, a slow pace can help ease the discomfort.
6. The
Trek
Didina – Bedni Bugyal
There are two ways to get to Bedni Bugyal, one direct and the other that takes one to
Tolpani and then down. The routes are both equally idyllic. The initial walk continues
through the forest and after a couple of hours as one approaches the tree line, it starts to
thin out.
You will be walking through mesmerising paths that twinkle with the streaming sunlight
that filters through the tress. And then all of a sudden you come to a point where the trees
vanish and the Ali Bugyal (nothing short of heaven on earth) opens up in front of you
affording breathtaking views of Nanda Ghungti, Maiktoli, Mriguthani and Thrishul. With its
rolling slopes and beautiful flora it is enough to take your already deepening breath away.
The last stretch to Bedni is a leisurely walk and a delight to your tiring feet. For those with a
romantic bent can even take off their shoes and feel the baby soft luxurious grass beneath
their feet. This will not only help you relax but will also transport you to a time of stolen
kisses and simple pleasures of holding hands with that first love.
7. The
Trek
Bedni Bugyal – Bhagwabhasa
From the campsite at Bedni Bugyal there is a stiff walk of about 200-300 feet to get back
onto the main trail. This walk is also on the meadow so your pace may also decide the
toughness of this patch. Once on the trail it is a gradual walk of about an hour till Patal
Nachauni.
The soul shattering beauty of this trail can be felt on these few days as one reaches Bedni
and ventures beyond. The Bedni Kund at the bugyal offers one such glimpse into the
splendour that is held within the folds of the Himalayas. The Trishul (a peak that haunts
the memories of all serious mountaineers) is reflected in all its glory in the Bedni Kund.
This is a sight that remains embedded in our memories till our dying breath and is also a
photographer’s delight.
There is one extremely stiff two hour climb as one approaches the Kalu Vinayak temple.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. After we leave the meadows behind us we
quite literally enter into the abode of the gods, where everything is magnified and
colossal. It’s not just the giants that surround you but there is also something in the air
that changes. Its almost like the aura of the mountains changes, like you can feel the heart
of the mountains and hear every beat being drummed in their ancient tongues.
8. The
Trek
As you start getting your first glimpses of Neelkant, Roopkund can also be identified in the
distance along with views of the Junargali Col, all of which are nothing short of awe
inspiring. From here on there is a gradual downhill walk till the campsite at Bhagwabhasa.
Bhagwabhasa – Roopkund – Junargali Col – Bedni Bugyal
Be prepared for a day that tests not just your physical but also your mental abilities. This is
a day that will make you question yourself and will show you just what metal you are made
of.
The first couple of hours from the Bhagwabhasa camp site are nothing but a straight uphill
climb. Just the last 1km approaching Roopkund is a descent.
From here the Junargali Col is only about a 20 minute climb. However, any attempt at it
can only be made keeping the weather and snow conditions in mind. If one does manage
to get to the top of the Junargali Col the views are unforgettable. It is the only place from
where Trishul can be seen in its entirety. From its splendid three pronged summit to the
glacier below, she is laid out for admiration and worship.
