Courtyard
RenovaIon

The
Fleck
Courtyard
is
one
of
two
central
courtyards
for
a
pre‐eminent
New
York
hospital
located
on
the
eastside
of
ManhaRan.
The
courtyard
has
been
redesigned
to
create
a
soothing
garden
and
outdoor
café
space
for
paIents,
their
families,
doctors
and
staff.
The
requirements
of
the
design
were
as
follows:
to
renovate
the
exisIng
courtyard
and
turn
the
space
into
a
welcoming
green
space,
to
maximize
area
for
seaIng,
to
keep
maintenance
requirements
low,
creaIng
no
disturbance
to
the
exisIng
slabs
and
transform
what
was
a
loud,
cold,
inhospitable
space
into
an
open
modern
design
that
would
complement
the
adjacent
architecture
of
the
Hospital.
The
scope
of
the
project
was
as
follows:
to
redesign
all
aspects
of
the
space.
This
included
determining
the
extent
of
demoliIon,
the
type
and
extent
of
site
paving,
sit
steps,
designing
a
custom
planter,
designing
green
roof
planIng,
in
ground
planIng,
land
forms,
lighIng
and
designaIng
furniture
locaIon.
The
intent
of
our
design
is
to
visually
connect
this
courtyard
with
the
exisIng
courtyard
to
north
through
a
glass
breezeway,
to
create
a
feeling
of
a
larger
landscape
that
conInuous
through
the
many
adjoining
hospital
buildings.
The
design
philosophy
is
that
a
simple
lawn,
given
tonal
and
spaIal
prominence
within
the
courtyard
will
produce
a
sense
of
calm.
Surrounding
the
space
with
flexible
seaIng
the
design
acknowledges
the
diversity
of
its
users
and
aims
to
encourage
release.
The
hospital
is
a
demanding
environment
that
needs
a
moment
of
pause.
The
landscape
architect
designed
the
project
from
conceptual
design
thru
construcIon
documentaIon
and
construcIon
administraIon.
The
Landscape
Architect
was
hired
by
architects
Michielli
+
Wyetzner
who
reviewed
designs,
and
acted
as
project
manager.
Special
features
of
the
project:
To
navigate
the
construcIon
of
structures
both
on
structural
slab
and
in‐ground
construcIon.
The
raised
lawn
and
birch
grove
are
the
extent
of
terra
firma
in
the
project.
The
remainder
of
the
courtyard
lies
on
a
structural
slab
that
spans
two
buildings
containing
sensiIve
laboratory
spaces
and
a
parking
garage.
The
in‐ground
planIng
offers
the
cooling
effects
of
a
green
lawn
and
trees
along
with
a
mounded
grove
that
brings
natural
forms
into
the
space.
The
design
offers
a
natural
feel
while
addressing
the
constraints
of
an
urban
site.
The
mix
of
hardscape,
planIng,
mounded
earth,
custom
planters
and
si_ng
steps
provide
opportuniIes
for
children
to
play
and
adults
to
let
go
and
replenish.
Sustainability:
The
design
incorporates
an
area
of
greenroof
planIng
over
the
structural
slab
increasing
the
non
paves
surface.
The
design
uIlizes
light
colored
paving
reducing
the
sites
impact
on
heat
island
affect.
The
design
reuses
sculptures
from
the
exisIng
site.
The
planIng
offers
flowers
for
bees,
and
habitat
for
small
birds
and
insects.
The
courtyard
uIlizes
low
emission
drip
irrigaIon
for
the
non
lawn
areas
reducing
potable
water
consumpIon.
Runoff
from
all
impervious
surfaces
is
contained
and
drained
back
into
the
soil
to
recharge
the
aquifer
and
alleviate
load
on
the
city
sewer
system.
