1. Fonterra
EDENDALE
Fonterra Edendale has been in operation for
over 133 years making it New Zealand’s oldest
manufacturing site. It was established in 1881
by entrepreneurs William Davidson and Thomas
Brydone. Through their dairy industry nous
and agricultural know-how they become the
first dairy factory to export cheddar cheese and
butter to markets around the world.
Fonterra Edendale’s longevity can be attributed to the Southland
environment, one of New Zealand’s fastest growing dairying
regions. During our peak season Edendale has the capacity to
process more than 15 million litres of milk per day which is
equivalent to around 650 tanker loads.
In 2009 our ED4 milk powder dryer was built. It has the ability to
produce a whopping 28 tonnes of milk powder per hour. This is a
crucial tool in helping produce over 300,000 tonnes of milk powder
and cream products for export every year. Our product is then
exported across the globe helping to positively impact the nutrition
of millions of people.
Not only is Edendale Fonterra’s oldest site but it is also Fonterra’s
largest operations site, still residing in its original location on State
Highway 1, north-east of Invercargill.
