Fonterra
EDENDALE
Fonterra Edendale has been in operation for
over 133 years making it New Zealand’s oldest
manufacturing site. It was established in 1881
by entrepreneurs William Davidson and Thomas
Brydone. Through their dairy industry nous
and agricultural know-how they become the
first dairy factory to export cheddar cheese and
butter to markets around the world.
Fonterra Edendale’s longevity can be attributed to the Southland
environment, one of New Zealand’s fastest growing dairying
regions. During our peak season Edendale has the capacity to
process more than 15 million litres of milk per day which is
equivalent to around 650 tanker loads.
In 2009 our ED4 milk powder dryer was built. It has the ability to
produce a whopping 28 tonnes of milk powder per hour. This is a
crucial tool in helping produce over 300,000 tonnes of milk powder
and cream products for export every year. Our product is then
exported across the globe helping to positively impact the nutrition
of millions of people.
Not only is Edendale Fonterra’s oldest site but it is also Fonterra’s
largest operations site, still residing in its original location on State
Highway 1, north-east of Invercargill.

PLANTS AND PRODUCTS
Milk Powders
• Edendale’s powder plant produces about 350,000 tonnes of
milk powder per year for export to international markets.
These include whole, skim, butter and fat filled milk powder.
• There are four milk dryers on site and together they have a
peak processing capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day.
• All milk powders can be tailored to meet specific customer
needs.
• Fonterra Edendale’s key milk powder customers include
Nestle, Mead Johnson, Promasidor and Want Want.
Cream Products
• There are two cream plants at our Edendale site, AMF1 and
AMF2. Together they can produce 9,000 tonnes of anhydrous
milk fat (AMF) per month.
• We export to over 40 countries around the world.
• Our current annual production is around 60,000 tonnes which
is packed into drums and bins.
• All of the ingredients made on site can be tailored to the
specific requirements of our Fonterra customers which
include Kraft, Mars and Hershey’s.
Cheddar Cheese
• Edendale makes around 5,000mt of cheddar cheese annually
• Beginning in February 1882, Edendale was the first cheese
factory in NZ to export.
• Whey protein concentrate (WPC), whey cheese & lactose are
all manufactured from whey by-product.
Central Packing
• Milk powder, casein and anhydrous milk fat (AMF) are packed
for export by our central packing team.
• 420,000MT of finished product and 30,000MT of ingredients
are handled by this team annually.
• 14 million bags of milk powder are exported from Edendale
each year. Laid end to end they would reach in a single line
from Invercargill to Dubai.
ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY
• A focus on continuous improvement has seen Edendale
achieve higher performance in areas as such eco-efficiency,
energy reduction, effluent losses and health and safety
performance.
• A substantial investment in rail transport to and from the
site means fewer truck movements on roads, reducing traffic
congestion and carbon emissions. Treated wastewater is
irrigated to land and wastewater from each part of the site is
tested daily to maximise efficiency.
• Edendale supports numerous organisations in the Southern
region. Our teams participate in riparian planting at both
Waituna Lagoon and Long Point in the Catlins. Through the
Grass Roots Fund, further support has been provided to rural
events, educational resources, emergency response groups
and schools.
