II n Luke 4:18, God gives us a charge — He anoints and empowers us to go out
and share His word with a lost world. You can start at home, on your job, at
school or wherever the opportunity presents itself. God wants us to share with
others that there is a better way of living; there is healing and deliverance from any situation;
there is peace that surpasses all understanding. These are just a few of God‘s awesome bless-
ings he gives us if we trust and believe in Him.
In our last issue, Pastor Byrd explained ―The Great
Commission‖ (Ref. Mark 16:15-16). In this issue,
Pastor Byrd will speak on ―Evangelism‖ and the various
evangelistic methods. To recap, to evangelize someone
is to give them the good news that they do not have to
suffer the final consequences of sin. If they believe that
Jesus died, buried and rose again, they will be saved
from sin‘s eternal results. Now, that is good news and all
the more imperative to share with others that Jesus is the only way. We are all in need of
salvation and salvation is only found in Jesus (John 3:16, 18), (Acts 4:10, 12).
Evangelism is a requirement, not a request. We are not limited as to who we can evangelize
to. We just need to take the first step and God will be with us every step of the way. 

Evangelism
EEvangelism is a cardinal instruction given to the church by Jesus Himself. It is the
sine quo non of the church. Evangelism is an indispensable element in the life of
the church, both local and universal. But, allow me to be a realist. Even though the ―great
commission‖ presents evangelism as crucial, and of necessity; it does not mean evangelism is
practiced by every church. In fact, churches typically practice ‗church transfer‘ vs. ‗the great
commissions‘ idea of ―evangelism.‖ The term ‗church transfer‘ means that the philosophy of
ministry of church ―A‖ is to do ―church‖ in such fashion that it will attract congregants from church ―B‖, ―C‖ and ―D‖ to
church ―A‖; therefore growing in number without any evangelism or discipleship whatsoever. In being fair and honest,
all churches practice some form of ‗church transfer.‘ The appeal may not be to necessarily attract from other churches,
but to be appealing to anyone, including their own members. The great danger of the philosophy of ―church transferism‖
is that it works. Even if it is used just to produce numbers without any regard for evangelism. When this happens a
church just ―swells‖ and ―swelling‖ as such is unhealthy. It‘s like one growing 1 or 2 inches from proper nutrition, verses
one growing 1 or 2 inches from a knot that resulted from bumping the top of your head. That knot is unhealthy growth.
There are a large number of Christians that are uncomfortable evangelizing. There fear is a lack of knowledge, fear of
people, being poor conversationalist, etc. What they may not realize is that there are various evangelistic methods. When
you examine 21st century evangelism I can think of approximately 5 types. First, there's personal evangelism. This is an
individual effort to share the gospel with those believed to be in need of the gospel. Second, there is mass evangelism.
This is typically preaching the gospel open air to large crowds. Third, is an evangelistic sermon. A pastor may inform a
congregation that on a particular Sunday of the month there will always be a clear evangelistic sermon. Forth type is
door-to-door. This method is done by canvassing the neighborhood with literature, and leaving it on each door step. And,
the fifth one is my favorite; friendship evangelism. This occurs when an individual focuses on a friend or family member.
I have listed only five evangelistic methods. There are more. Allow me to say each type has its limitations. But, if a
Christian is sincere about being obedient to the great commission, he or she can find an evangelistic type that's within
their comfort zone.

Evangelism — Proclaiming the Good News,
Gospel, written accounts of the life and
teachings of Jesus Christ.
The key message of the Good News is that God
offers a new life and forgiveness through Jesus Christ,
specifically the coming Kingdom of God.
In giving the Great Commission to the apostles,
Jesus commanded them to ―Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, teaching them to observe
all things I have commanded you‖ (Matthews 28:19-
20). The Lord has commanded us to teach His word to
the lost so that they can be saved. The New Testament
urges believers to speak the gospel clearly, fearlessly,
graciously and respectfully whenever an opportunity
presents itself.
We are trying to fulfill God‘s command as evangel-
ists and missionaries teaching in foreign countries, on
street corners, in tents and TV ministries and as leaders
in the church. Evangelism is not hard to do, nor is it
done in any specific way. You must discover what
method works best for you. We can bring others to
Christ by example. We should show his redeeming love
through the way we treat people, sharing our blessings
with those less fortunate, a kind word, a listening ear,
sharing our testimony. We can mentor young people
and show them love, reach out to family members,
friends, co-workers and neighbors. They could be the
nation that you are called to make disciples. If people
haven‘t heard and learned the gospel, they cannot obey
it.
―The Word of God is living and active, sharper than
any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from
spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the
thoughts and intentions of the heart and before Him no
creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare
to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an
account‖ (Hebrews 4:12, 13, NRSV).
Remember, if you can make a friend, you can
evangelize.

I n 2008 President Barack Obama (then Senator and
Presidential Candidate), delivered a Father‗s Day
speech in which he was especially candid regarding the
state of the family. As he spoke, it was obvious his focus
was on the deteriorating family structure as a result of
absent fathers; he used several statistics to drive the point
home. You‘ve heard the statistics cited for children that
grow up without a father.
They are...
Five times more likely to live in poverty and commit
crime
Nine times more likely to drop out of schools
Twenty times more likely to end up in prison
The list goes on and on but there‘s another set of statistics
that are cited less often:
73.2 million children in the U.S. are under age 18
70% of all children live with two parents
51.0 million children are being raised by a mother
and a father
Of that 51.0 million:
87% live with their biological mother and biological
father.
13% live with two parents one of which is not a
biological parent presumably, adopted, stepparent
or grandparent.
These statistics suggest that the vast majority of men
are actively involved in raising and providing for their
biological and/or adopted children. Yet, it‘s the ―dead-
beat dad‖ that dominates most conversations on paternal
accountability and responsi-
bility.
I‘m not suggesting we throw a
parade for fathers doing what
they‘re supposed to do but if
we are going to afford 364
days a year to a discourse on
deadbeats, can we at least
acknowledge a job well done
by the majority?

A Father’s Day Prayer
Let us praise those
fathers who have
striven to balance
the demands of
work, marriage,
and children with
an honest aware-
ness of both joy and sacrifice. Let us praise those fathers
who, lacking a good model for a father, have worked to
become a good father.
Let us praise those fathers who, by their own account,
were not always there for their children but who continue
to offer those children, now grown, their love and sup-
port. Let us pray for those fathers who have been
wounded by the neglect and hostility of their children.
Let us praise those fathers who, despite divorce, have
remained in their children's lives. Let us praise those
fathers whose children are adopted, and whose love and
support has offered healing.
Let us praise those fathers who, as stepfathers, freely
choose the obligation of fatherhood and earned their step-
children's love and respect. Let us praise those fathers
who have lost a child to death, and continue to hold the
child in their heart.
Let us praise those men who have no children, but cherish
the next generation as if they were their own.
Let us praise those men who have "fathered" us in their
role as mentors and guides.
Let us praise those men who are about to become fathers;
may they openly delight in their children.
And let us praise those fathers who have died, but live on
in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us.
Let the brothers say AMEN! 

Graduation is only a concept. In real life every day, you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of
your life. If you can grasp that, you will make a difference.

God is not looking for our accomplishments, but for our brokenness. — ―God will use one failure, the one thing you
can‘t get glory from, for your achievement.‖ What God wants is not the great things that we can accomplish but our
obedience for Him to work through. Despair is a sin, because it denies the sovereignty of God. ―You should never quit –
be not afraid. God is sovereign. He will often use that in your life which you least expect for His greatest accomplishment.‖
We‘re always saying to ourselves that we want something better – and who‘s going to give it to you? Only the church
offers a view of life and reality that people can live with. You and I are the ones that can present that to a world which is
increasingly hungry for the wrong things.
I charge you to defend the truth. — Two-thirds of all Americans say there is no such thing as truth, and 60 percent of
born-again Christians agree. There is truth, there is ultimate reality, and we find it in Biblical revelation. We are the
custodians of it and the ones who can make a difference but it means we have to start thinking and acting differently.
Christians need to start acting and thinking differently. We need to stop acting like sheep, enjoying their worship services
but never thinking about their faith and the impact it has on the world.
Graduates, you can make a difference if you will use your minds. Think, as a Christian, and you will realize that Christian-
ity is more than John 3:16, it is more than the cross; it is more than our salvation, though it is never less than that.
The Bible answers all of the fundamental questions of where we come from, why we live with sin, and what our purpose is.
It is imperative that we have a biblically informed worldview that enables us to see all of life and then act upon it.
Christian truth can be brought to bear in a few ways. — You can contend for truth apologetically – always be prepared
to give a reason for the hope that is within you but with gentleness and reverence.
You must start living out one’s faith. — ―If we do the gospel and people see it, all of the other arguments fade away.‖
―If we want to overcome the resistance that we find in society today, we must go and do the gospel and let them see it,
and then they will be drawn to you.‖
Christians, we need to do our duty. — My whole idea on Christian service has changed, ―It‘s not heroic – I don‘t have
any choice. Gratitude is the mother of all virtues and if we really understand what God has done for us, then we have no
choice – we are compelled to serve Christ with everything we have – to do our duty out of gratitude for what He has done.‖

So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the
gospel, by the power of God, 9
who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but
because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10
but it has
now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and
immortality to light through the gospel. 11
And of this gospel I was appointed a herald, an apostle, and a teacher. 12
That is
why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able
to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. (II Timothy 1:8-11 )

community through well-educated Christian professionals. You have made a choice not to be ashamed.
When we are set apart for God, we want to think as Christ thinks. As we have the mind of Christ, we begin to see the world the
way God sees it and the things that break the heart of God break our hearts. That leads us to a desire to work for the transforma-
tion of all society – the redemption of all of God's creation...‖
The reality of the resurrection and God's triumph over evil gives us a reason to be confident as we engage with the world.
As you graduate take your skills into the marketplace, the Kingdom of God will advance, leading to that day when righteousness
shall reign.
This work is physically and emotionally exhausting. But if we believe that the power of the resurrection has conquered the power
of sin; if we believe that one day evil shall perish and righteousness shall reign; we continue in the struggle to bring about the
Kingdom of God.
May all of you who are involved in the journey of faith, sense the blessing and peace of God as you equip others to invade our
fallen world. 
