The sensory system has limited capacity and performs two main operations: momentary storage and feature extraction. It immediately organizes visual input by enhancing contours, centering figures, and isolating figures from backgrounds. Each sensory system acts as a short-term buffer, storing stimuli for less than one second in the case of vision to allow preliminary analysis and matching with memories. The separate sensory systems feed into long-term memory where information from different senses can be integrated.
