Editor's Notes
The world that you knew will never be the same. Those 3 small words are confronting on so many levelsVulnerableAloneTerrifiedThose 3 words lead to so many questionsAm I going to dieHow will my family copeHow will I be able to keep workingWill I lose my hairWill people stare at meWill people treat me differentlyFrom the pen of one patient “I became increasingly emotionally vulnerable. I think the physical demands were beginning to impinge on my emotional state. I experienced mood swings and it was probably difficult for those close to me to understand. I felt a sense of emptiness and uselessness. At times I just didn’t like myself. The physical side effects of the chemotherapy didn’t help – no hair, swollen face, and pale complexion.” These are the words of a patient undergoing treatment for cancer. This journey is different for everyone but there is often a common thread of vulnerability, fear, uncertainty and loss of control. These physical changes can undermine self esteem and makes coping with the disease more difficult. This is where LGFB comes in
What is LGFB and this Lipstick theoryThe late Dr William Cahan, formerly Senior Attending Surgeon at MemorialSloan-Kettering CancerCentre,NewYork.“Cosmetics, like laughter, can be therapeutic. What appears to be a superficial matter has a much deeper meaning for many women. My female patients are just as concerned about the effects of their cancer therapy on their skin and hair as their bone marrow and digestive tract. Unfortunately, one of the problems with many of these life saving therapies is that if a woman looks in the mirror and sees a stranger looking back, someone she doesn’t recognize, it makes it more difficult to treat her successfully. I honestly believe that a patient who feels good about herself – and that includes her appearance – is a patient who will work with her doctors and therapies.”LGFB commenced in the states Ed Kavanagh story: Miraculously, the make-over transformed not just the woman’s look, but her outlook, as well. She immediately felt happier and less burdened, laughing for the first time in weeks. The doctor credited the make-over with improving her attitude and emotional approach toward her treatment. Why ? To give back
Look Good…Feel Better is a safe harbor where a person can be themselves, they can laugh and cry, admit they want to look normal, they want to look like they use to look before those 3 small words. Through the simple yet powerful tools of cosmetics, hat, turbans and wigs we bring hope, normality and help each participant to look at their reflection and to recognise the same person that was in this mirror before those 3 small words came into their life. These tools become an integral and meaningful part of the cancer treatment journey and the battle to keep the hope alive. Through our program we let the inner and outer beauty of these people shine.
High % participants not used cosmetics keep it simple Participants work with the vols to learn the technique through hands on expSponsored by cosm industry, over $2million products each year, 1500 volunteers give over 10,000 hrs, health prof promoted and advocate the benefits of the program. To date have helped over 72,000 Australians living with cancerThe program is for any woman diagnosed with cancer no matter what treatment.
Unfortunately some people think this is not for them for a number of reasons.
This may be the case but the skin can change and it is very different applying makeup with no brows and lashes and different tone to the skin.
The oldest patient we have had was 102 and she learnt so much. With the help of our wonderful friends working in Oncology and our volunteers we are able to reassure these reluctant participants that our workshops can make a real difference. We have so many say “I am so glad I came” because LGFB helped me to:
The impact the workshops can have on our participants is inspirational. One of these inspiring moments came from a very unlikely woman.
It doesn’t matter what I look like I am only on the farmVery shyRegistered at the encouragement of another patientHad on a red jumperGiven a red lipstick according to her reg formWas mesmerisedPlease look at me because I look beautiful
Throughout my 19 years with this program I have met many people just like Anna, people who face this journey with strength beyond imagination, with courage beyond comprehension and optimism beyond belief. It is these people and their fusion of strength and vulnerability that has provided some of the most poignant and joyous moments of my career.Where to from here.We plan to continue to help even more. “What sometimes breaks our heart strengthens our soul.”
