In Local news, temperatures have dropped below zero throughout mid-Michigan. Wind
chills have dipped down to twenty degrees below zero. Along with the freezing weather and slick
road conditions, Mid-Michigan is experiencing a large number of traffic accidents. As the frigid
weather continues, the Michigan State Police are encouraging drivers to be cautious when going
outdoors during the week.
Four arrest have been made after a fight in Downtown Mount Pleasant
Early Sunday morning, dozens of people crowded the streets as a fight broke out between
two women. The cause of the fight is unknown. As police made the arrest of the two women,
another woman began to intervene. Police also arrested her and charged the three women with
minor in possession of alcohol and disorderly conduct. The fourth arrest came when an 18-year
old Wyandotte man blocked the road as police cleared the crowd. He also was charged with a
minor in possession. No injuries occurred nor were there any weapons used. It is unknown if the
individuals arrested are CMU students.
Former Pulitzer Prize winner dies
Philip Levine, a Detroit native, died today at his California home. He was 87-years old.
Levine’s cause of death is uncertain as he was diagnosed with both Pancreatic and liver cancer a
month ago. Funeral arrangements are pending. Levine is survived by his wife Frances of 60
years and three sons. Levine is known for writing books “What Work Is” and “News of the
World.” His poem “The Simple Truth” won him the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1995. Levine
also taught at California State University for more than three decades where he mentored the
next generation of poets.
And in State news, the Michigan Panel has decided not change guidelines for handling
radioactive sludge.
Over the weekend, the state panel agreed that the Michigan Department of Environmental
Quality disposal guidelines concerning radium are safe for public health and the environment.
The Panel made their decision after reviewing a study on the radioactivity limits for landfills.
Recommendations for handling naturally occurring radioactive materials in Michigan were made
by the panel to restrict the number of materials accepted by licensed landfills while acquiring
additional groundwater.
In a case of child welfare, the state of Michigan is spending Big bucks.
Michigan is currently paying a private law firm 5-hundred-and-fifty-eight dollars an hour
to end court oversight of the state’s child welfare system. Attorney John Bursch is working for

2. the state of Michigan to persuade a judge to end or reshape an agreement made between the
Department of Human Services and New York’s Children’s Right. Warner Norcross & Judd has
received one-hundred-and-eight-three thousand, eight-hundred and twenty-three dollars since
December. As of now, Michigan has paid over 10-million dollars to Children’s Rights on the
behalf of twenty-thousand children.
Isis new propaganda video shows possible mass execution
The new video released on Sunday by the terror group Isis shows an apparent mass
killing of twenty-one members of Egypt’s Coptic Christian minority on a Libyan beach. On the
same cue, all the victims are pushed to the ground and beheaded. The Egyptian government has
yet to confirm the killings. Coptic Christians are three of the main traditions under the Christian
umbrella. They make up between eight and eleven percent of Egypt’s 80-million citizens.
In sports, the CMU Wrestling team lost to Old Dominion 22-9 on Sunday at McGuirk
Arena. Junior, Jackson Lewis lost to Kevin Beazley via a 10-4 decision. The Chippewas did not
secure a win until senior; Tyler Kesselring beat Michael Hayes by a 2-0 decision. On Friday the
Chippewas will face off against Eastern Michigan at 7 P-M.
The CMU baseball team wrapped up their four-game series Sunday with a 5-2 win at
Florida Gulf Coast. Logan Regnier went 2-for-4 with an R-B-I double and a run scored. On
Friday, the Chippewas will start a three-game series at Stetson. First Pitch is at 6:30 P-M.
Central Michigan distance runner Abbey Kelto broke the CMU record in the women’s 3-
thousand meter run. She placed fifth in 9 minutes, twenty-seven seconds. She broke the record
set by Chris Cooper in 1987. CMU will travel to Allendale for the Grand Valley State Tune-up
on Friday.
On Valentine’s day, over 1-thousand runners ran a half-mile down Park Avenue and
Clifford Street in their underwear. Detroit’s annual Cupid Undie Run is held in every year to
help raise awareness and money for noo-row-FIBRO-muh-toe-sis, a progressive genetic disorder
that causes tumors to grow on nerves in the body. More than two-hundred-thousand dollars were
raised in this year’s run.
In weather, the U.S. National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for
Mount Pleasant. The advisory will be in effect until Monday at 10 o’clock A-M Eastern Standard
Time. Currently, it is -11 degrees outside.
Tomorrow’s weather will be mostly cloudy and frigid. We will reach a high of 11 degrees
with a low of one degrees. Stay Warm and hope for a snow day!!
