5. Meloidogyne javanica is a nematode pathogen
which infects over 770 species of plants.
The host of these pathogen includes crops of
highly economic value.
The host range includes tea, grapevine, fruit tree,
cereals , ornamentals, bell pepper, capsicum and
ornamentals.
they severely affect the major agricultural crops.
7. All root-knot nematodes are obligate sedentary
endoparasites of plant roots and tubers.
they enter the root and establish a feeding site from
which they do not move.
They induce small or large root swellings called root-
knots or galls. Their infective second-stage juveniles
(J2) hatch from the eggs in the soil and penetrate the
tip of a suitable root where they develop into sedentary
and swollen juveniles and adult females .Males are
wormlike, not parasitic and exit the root when they
reach adulthood in search of suitable females to mate
with. All root-knot nematodes induce formation of
specialized trophic sites (feeding sites) called giant
cells that provide essential nutrients for their
development and egg production.
