Idealist 101:
How to get the most
out of Idealist.org
#Idealist101
We're Matt and Kim
And we're here for you
Our team
● reviews applications from
organizations (like yours!)
● monitors other site content
● helps you make the most of Idealist
● develops initiatives to engage our
community
What is Idealist.org?
Founded in 1995, Idealist is a nonprofit that connects people,
organizations, opportunities, and resources to help build a world
where all people can live free and dignified lives.
On Idealist, 78,000 organizations are posting:
- Over 9,500 jobs
- Over 6,000 internships
- About 14,000 volunteer opportunities
- About 600 events
We also have sites in Spanish (idealistas.org) and French
(idealiste.org)!
Idealist is a platform where you can:
● Share your work with millions of people
● Post opportunities for others to get involved
● Find and connect with other organizations and individuals
● Act as an individual in the community, offering your
expertise as a resource and seeking other individuals to
collaborate with.
Today we'll talk about
● Making a great organization page
● Posting the best listings ever
● Connecting and reaching out to your community through
Idealist
● Involving other people in your organization
● Using Idealist as an individual
Think about Marion.
Making your organization page the best ever
Make your organization's page look as good as possible. It's
your public face on Idealist!
You'll want to make it:
● Appealing
● Clear
● Easy to find
Let's take a look at
this org
Here's an organization page
that could use some work.
Then let's take a look
at this org:
Here's a great organization page.
Let's go back for a
moment
and fix up this organization page.
Then start posting!
You can post
● Jobs
● Internships
● Volunteer Opportunities
● Events
Just click on the "Post a Listing" button to
get started.
And here's a completed job.
Let's take a look!
Remember Marion?
What happens to your listing once you click
"Publish"
● It goes out in email alerts to all users whose criteria it matches.
● It's searchable for anyone who visits our site.
● It goes to the top of the search results.
● It can be shared by our users through social media and email.
● It goes out to our partner sites.
● You can share it via your social media channels.
● And you can still edit it!
How can my listings attract the best people?
There are a few parts to posting great listings:
● Make them Appealing
● Make them Clear
● Make them Easy to find
Make the position appealing:
● Make a good impression.
● Talk about the benefits.
○ experience
○ growth opportunities
○ perks
○ warm fuzzies
● Make the listing look good
○ Use our text editor and formatting options
● Be yourself. Choose a tone that reflects your organization's
culture.
Make the listing as clear as you can.
● Briefly describe your organization.
● Make sure the description of the work is clear and concise.
● Be thoughtful about the qualifications you list.
● Make your application instructions clear.
Making sure your listing is easy to find:
● The description
● Keywords
● Location
● Areas of Focus
● Job Functions
● Salary Range
Let's talk more about "searchability."
● "Searchability" is how easy it is for someone to find something on
our site
● Imagine you're looking for an opportunity. How would you look for
things?
● You want to load up your organization page and its listings with as
many ways to find it as possible.
● Let's take a look at the search function on our site!
And you can post events too!
The same idea applies:
Make it clear. Make it appealing. And make it easy to find.
Now let's go back to this bangin' listing!
National Teaching Fellowship with Citizen Schools
You'll only pay to post jobs.
Everything else is free!
● Posting a job costs only $70.
● View and pay your invoices online by clicking the link on your
organization page.
● We accept credit cards and checks.
● You'll need to be an administrator of the page to pay online.
Get everyone involved in reaching out to the
Idealist community!
Include your
● Communications manager
● Human resources staff
● Event coordinator
● Program managers
● Volunteer coordinator
● Office managers
● Accounts payable (only admins can pay invoices online!)
● Interns
Becoming an admin is easy! They just need to click on "Become an
Administrator" on your org page. Then you can approve them.
You can specify permissions for all of your
administrators
Use Idealist to connect with your community!
● Connect with other organizations
○ Show off your network!
○ Find some new collaborators
● Invite people to connect with you to follow your activity
on Idealist
○ Keep your community up to date on the opportunities
you're offering.
And remember, you're an individual too!
Don't forget about your profile.
● You're awesome, and you work for a great organization.
Be a resource.
● You can connect with other users as a person, not just
an org.
● Share ideas and build a network of like-minded people.
● Professional development
How do I make it great?
● The same idea for filling out your organizational profile
applies to your individual profile - make it appealing,
clear, and easy to find.
● Check out this guy.
To summarize:
● Make your organization profile the best ever
● Post great listings as often as you can
● Add some other administrators to help you out
● Connect with your community through Idealist
● Represent yourself as an individual
● And remember, everything you do should be:
Appealing, Clear, and Easy to find.
