15. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
Key Objectives!
• Incubate projects and ideas through the SGAC network
regarding NEOs!
• Create outreach tools about NEOs!
• Collect the perspectives from young people on
countermeasures for NEOs to provide input into the UN!
Near-Earth Object (NEO) Project Group!
10/24/13!
15!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Background!
NEOs are comets and asteroids that have been
nudged into orbits that allow them to enter the
Earth's neighbourhood. The possibility of collision
to Earth is low but exists. Space agencies and
governments around the world are focusing their
research on them.!
16. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
!
Key Objectives!
• To identify key issues and areas of space safety and
sustainability relating to current and proposed space operations!
• To examine the safety and long-term sustainability of outer
space activities in all aspects, taking into account the interests
of all countries.!
• To create an international space forum to showcase the youthʼs
perspective on the safety of space activities, and the
sustainability of the space environment for future generations!
Space Safety & Sustainability (SSS)!
10/24/13!
16!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Background!
!Space safety refers to the safeguard of valuable
space facilities and people on the ground and in
orbit as well as the security of the ground and
space environments themselves. !
17. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
Background!
!The UN came with the resolution of the need "to implement
an integrated, global system, especially through international
cooperation, to manage natural disaster mitigation, relief and
prevention efforts, especially of an international nature,
through Earth observation, communications and other space-
based services, making maximum use of existing capabilities
and filling gaps in worldwide satellite coverage“. !
Space Technology Disaster Management (STDM)!
10/24/13!
17!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Key Objectives!
• To inform the general public on how space technologies and space-derived
information are valuable in disaster management!
• To provide a channel for new perspectives which contribute to the research
efforts on space technologies used in disaster management!
• To provide a forum to those who have an interest in disaster management
and space activities, and their impact on society!
18. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
!
Key Objectives!
• Provide input to ICG, particularly on matters related to education and
public outreach, and to act as a medium for information dissemination on
GNSS!
• Promote activities relating to cooperation in GNSS and GNSS applications!
• Present the benefits of GNSS at various conferences around the world!
• YGNSS supports the International Committee on GNSS (ICG), an
international forum for cooperation on Global Navigation Satellite Systems
recognized by the United Nations!
Youth Global Navigation Satellite Systems (YGNSS)!
10/24/13!
18!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Background!
Global Navigation Satellite Systems are
embedded in our daily life (mobile phones,
GPS…), and now almost every country in the
world has satellites on orbit to provide data to
the users. However, there is a huge lack of
information in the society about them.!
19. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
!
Key Objectives!
• Career and project assistance for young professionals and students
already active in the small satellite community.!
• Provide the small satellite community with up-to-date information on
relevant topics, as well as recommendations regarding the directions to
be taken for future research and development and/or policy and legal
issues. !
• Attract young professionals and students to the world of small satellites
and generally to the world of space exploration.!
Small Satellites project Group (SSPG)!
10/24/13!
19!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Background!
Over the past few years, small satellites have
changed the landscape of space exploration. They
facilitate quicker, cost effective and reliable access to
space. This provides a potential opportunity to have
smaller project groups and encourages new actors to
develop their capabilities in the space domain.!
20. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
Key Objectives!
• Research and disseminate knowledge about space law.!
• Provide law and policy perspectives on ongoing and planned space
activities.!
• Foster understanding between legal practitioners and academics and the
global space community of scientists, engineers, and other technical
professionals.!
• Present space law issues at various conferences and symposia.!
• Foster a community of emerging space law and policy students and young
professionals.!
Space Law Project Group (SLPG)!
10/24/13!
20!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Background !
International space law is the overarching framework for all
space activities, whether conducted by governments and
national space agencies, private industry, or universities
and amateurs. National space law implements the
international framework, and contractual arrangements
further divide rights and responsibilities..!
21. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
!
Key Objectives!
• Conduct academic research on the “theory of industrial practice” in the
commercial space sector.!
• Gather a next generation “think-tank” for commercial space.!
• Make the project influential upon decision-makers and getting the generationʼs
thoughts on commercial space be heard publicly.!
• Equip the young generation with knowledge, tools and network to be active in
the realm of commercial space and entrepreneurship.!
Commercial Space Project Group (CSPG)!
10/24/13!
21!IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS PROGRAMME ON SPACE APPLICATIONS!
Background!
Commercial space activities have helped to reach numerous
past achievements and played a major role in shaping the
way space has been used and is used today. Driven by the
potentially game-changing developments of the recent years
and the new emerging challenges, the CSPG strives to
support the young generation in understanding the underlying
dynamics and getting involved. !
22. SGAC: BEYOND A NETWORK!
