10 minute Power point presentation done for my Multi-Track Mixing Class as part of my HNC in Sound Production. this was Presented to lecturer David Burnett.
2. OASIS BACKGROUND INFORMATION
• Oasis were an English rock band from Manchester formed in 1991
• The "Britpop" style adopted by Oasis was a reaction to dance music and American
grunge in the early 90s.
• Heavily influenced by John Lennon and the Beatles
• During their 18 years as a band they released 7 studio albums
3. SONG STRUCTURE
• 4 bar piano intro (John Lennon's Imagine)
• Drums and Guitars join in to begin verse 1 – 8 Bars
• 8 bar Bridge
• Builds to chorus which is made up of two guitars, drums, piano and tambourine
along with lead vocals
• Musical break before going into second verse
• Bridge follows
• Chorus is then sung three times
• Lead guitar plays between to act as a glue between the differing section
4. INTRO
• The 8 bar intro is played on a Steinway Model Z piano (The same as john lennons
in imagine)
• For two brief moments there is a distorted electric guitar plays a short riff
• When this is played the second time the drums join in and this then becomes the
start of the verse 1.
5. BRIDGE
• As the bridge continues from the piano intro the instrumentation builds to
include a slightly overdriven guitar, drums and bass.
• The drums change during the bridge to play a tom rhythm which really shows of
the great capture they got during the recording stage.
• In the bridge we also hear a bit more of the piano again as it plays striking
chords. This is quite faint in the back of the mix tho.
6. CHORUS
• The chorus keeps the same instrumentation found earlier in the track but also
features strings which we have not heard before. After this first introduction the
strings can be heard throughout the chorus’.
• In the chorus the guitars become more prominent also.
• As the chorus begins Noel really starts going for it with the vocal but the levels
stay the same which may indicate a little bit of compression on his track at some
points.
7. VERSE
• There is not much different in the verse and chorus (apart from the words obvs).
• As we move into the verse we lose the strings and the piano accompaniment.
• The two guitars continue through out one with the same distortion as we heard
before.
• We also loose the little bit of distortion that was heard on Noels vocal track.
8. SIGNAL PROCESSING
• Noels vocals have a slight touch of reverb as he sings the chorus.
• Very tight consistent bass which could show that its been compressed. Although
bass seems to get a bit lost at some points in the track
• As far as the stereo image is concerned most elements seem to be very centered.
The only thing that strays from the center is the guitars which play sit left/right in
the mix at some points.
9. PRODUCTION NOTES
• Great drum sound throughout which sounds like it was done in a larger room
similar to ssl 1 live room. Drums sound quite prominent in a large part of the
track and sit very well with the bass guitar for the most part but I feel that the
bass guitar gets drowned out at some points unless listening on quality
headphones or monitors. (My Corsa sound system just doesn't’t cut it)
• The active movement of guitars in the stereo image give the track a wider feel
seeing as everything is pretty centered.
• I like that Noel Gallagher's vocals are pretty clean throughout (slight bit of reverb
at points) since this was his first time performing vocals on a major Oasis track,
before DLBIA he had only sung on B side tracks.
10. PRODUCTION NOTES
• My favorite aspect of the recording is the piano that is featured throughout. I feel
that this has been very well captured and throws the track back to the Beatles’ era
before contrasting the style with the (Then Current) Britpop styles.
11. OWEN MORRIS
• Owen Morris performed the role of mix down engineer on this track where he
acted as the recording engineer, setting the gain stage, and along side the
performers, set the mic placements. Owen Morris also acted as the mixing
engineer and also was tasked with putting the “(What's the Story) Morning Glory”
to 5.1 surround sound.
• As a Mix down engineer Owen Morris was also responsible for all of the post
production of the track. This includes aspects of the track such as the E.Q,
compression, time based effects such as reverb. He also is the guy that sorts the
stereo image of the track I.E active panning of guitar tracks etc.
• I feel that Owen Morris was a great choice of engineer for this album as he was a
major contributor during the Britpop age and captures the style of the band and
music very well.
