Personal Statement:
I am a Physics graduatefromthe University of Southampton with a desireto apply my skills to the world of work,
challengingmyself and ultimately forginga successful career. Duringmy study I demonstrated not justthe typical
attributes of a physicist, such as timekeeping and an ability to learn quickly, but also strong communication skills.
This builton my existingability, forged by givingnumerous speeches and presentations to rooms of up to 200
people duringmy time as school councillor, deputy Head Boy and competitive debating team member. Whilst
there are a number of ways I look forward to developing as I pursue my career, I am especially excited at the
prospect of applyingmy problem solvingskillsto real lifesituations.

2. Academic notes:
In my university Life in the Cosmos module, I finished with the highestscore in the cohort, achieving a firstin both
the essay and presentation assessments. In the individual feedback for the presentation,my tutor praised my
understandingof the topic, makingspecific reference to how a sparinguseof text on the slides madeiteasy for
me to get my message across. In the essay section,I was awarded the highest mark in the year, with the piece
itself described as “readinglikean essay or book”. I think both these results reflectan ability to distil and make
sense of largequantities of complex information, and also demonstrate my ability as a communicator.I achieved a
firstin my other assessed presentation atuniversity,on the topic of the sun and blackbody radiation, and on
multipleoccasionsgained experiencefrom givinginformal presentations to my peers.
After my GCSEs, at school I took 4 full A Levels (not includingGeneral Studies) and an Extended Project. The
Extended Project investigated the future of spaceexploration, and included a “Science Fair”stylepresentation. I
achieved sufficientmarks to be awarded an A* in this task, in addition to the Project overall. Whilstany
achievement in General Studies should not be overplayed, it may be worth noting that I obtained full marks in the
timed essay on the theme of science; an essay which was intended for a reader without scientificbackground.
Again I feel this is testament to my ability to quickly comprehend and explain complex information. In general, I
believe that the strongpresence of humanities subjects and communication throughout my academic lifeshows
me to be a good, all round candidate, and in no way a one-dimensional physicist.
Experience:
Team work and presentation: Whilstatschool I was elected deputy Head Boy by the other students in my year
group, followingthree consecutiveelection victories to represent them in the years prior. Each election campaign
involved givingpresentations to the entirety of my year of over 200 students . The subsequent role itself involved
me givinga range of presentations to students, staff and parents. I believe this gives further evidence, not justof
my ability to communicate with and make an impression on people, but also of my confidenceand ability to deal
with pressure. Instead of ramblingon further in an attempt to justify my success in thatenvironment, I will simply
point to the fact that my peers sawfit to reinstate me so many times. I made the decision not to stand for Head
Boy in my final year, choosinginstead to focus fully on my A levels.
For two years I also represented the school on the debating team, facingoff againstother schools aspartof a
team. Whilststudyingfor my degree there were also multipleinstances whereI had to work in a team, primarily in
a lab environment. On all such occasionsI was successful, forginggood relationshipswith my fellowphysicists and
havingmy groups’ work consistently graded at 2:1 or above.
Organisational skills: In addition to that implicitabove, I gained further organisational experienceduring a work
placement atLuton Borough Council. As with my time on the school council, this involved participatingin
numerous scheduled meetings, often balancingtakingminutes with engaging in the discussion. I earned the
respect and friendship of my colleagues, despite an obvious difference in our worldly experience. At the end of the
placement my boss,John Harper, described me as “the best work placement we’ve ever had”.
Interests:
Gaming: I have quite a strong interest in gaming. Pathetically or impressively, depending on your persuasion,I was
once the world’s top ranked competitive Pokémon player.
3. Travelling: I enjoy travellingwith my friends, and duringthe past3 summers have travelled through a veritable
smorgasbord of European countries.I met new friends of various nationalities whilststayingin differenthostels,
and have improved my ability to speak German in that time (albeitwith a horrific English accent).
Coding: In addition to the programming that my degree entailed,I enjoy making video game modificationsand
tinkeringwith the function of various apps on the computer. A closefri end and I once embarked upon a project to
completely remake the classic strategy game Riseof Nations, replacingthe defaul t nations of Earth with ones from
a detailed world of our own creation. I also completed a codingmodule as partof my degree, achievinga high 2:1.
Reading: As might be expected, I enjoy readinga great deal.WhilstI lovefiction and have a particular fondness for
sci-fi books such as Iain Banks’Cultureseries,I also spend a largeamount of time readingnon-fiction.Many an
evening has been spent going down the rabbithole of links on an interestingWikipedia article, and I am also a
keen reader of scientific and philosophical papers and essays.
