3. • The Islamic Republic of Iran (Jomhuri-ye Eslami-ye Iran) is located in
southwest Asia and borders the Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, and
Caspian Sea. Iran shares its northern borders with three post-Soviet
states: Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan. These borders
extend for more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi), including nearly
650 kilometres (400 mi) of water along the southern shore of the
Caspian Sea. Iran's western borders are with Turkey in the north and
Iraq in the south, terminating at the Shatt al-Arab, which Iranians call
the Arvand Rud.
• The Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman littorals form the entire 1,770
kilometres (1,100 mi) southern border. To the east lie Afghanistan on
the north and Pakistan on the south. Iran's diagonal distance from
Azerbaijan in the northwest to Sistan and Baluchestan Province in
the southeast is approximately 2,333 kilometres (1,450 mi).

5. • Iran is the second largest economy in the Middle East and North
Africa region in terms of GDP - US$484 billion in 2012 (after Saudi
Arabia) and in terms of population (after Egypt). It is characterized by
a large hydrocarbon sector, small scale private agriculture and
services, and a noticeable state presence in manufacturing and
finance. In 2010, the service sector (including Government)
contributed 55 percent to GDP, followed by manufacturing with 22
percent, agriculture with 14 percent, and oil and gas with 9 percent.
Iran ranks second in the world in natural gas reserves and third in oil
reserves. It is the second largest OPEC oil producer; output
averaged about 4 million barrels per day in recent years. Revenues
from oil and gas exports accounted for about 60 percent of
government revenues in 2011/12.

7.
8. Strengths
• iran has the world's second largest proven oil reserves after Saudi
Arabia, and the world's second largest proven gas reserves after
Russia.
• Oil and gas aside, Iran is rich in other resources and has a strong
agricultural sector.
Weaknesses
• Local consumption of hydrocarbons is rising rapidly; this, coupled
with ageing technology in the sector, will have a negative impact on
its oil and gas exporting capacity.
• International sanctions discourage foreign oil companies from
bringing much-needed technical knowledge and equipment to
maintain oil output levels.
9. Opportunities
• The gas sector remains underdeveloped, and there is considerable
room to maximise this source of revenue.
• A growing population, combined with a shortage of housing, provide
opportunities for investment in residential construction.
Threats
• Further deterioration in Iran's relations with the international
community over its nuclear programme will result in the imposition of
more extensive economic measures by the UN Security Council or
the US.
• Capital flight is likely to continue owing to high inflation and currency
depreciation.
