1. A VISUAL EXPERIENCE
in the Book of Obadiah

2. This is an exercise in the power of images
and how they increase your understanding
the Bible.
If you can see what the Prophet Obadiah
was saying, your understanding will take
your faith to higher heights.
5. 1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the
Lord GOD concerning Edom— We have
heard a report from the LORD, And an
envoy has been sent among the nations
saying, “Arise and let us go against her for
battle”—
6. 2 “Behold, I will make you small among the
nations; You are greatly despised.
7. 3 “The arrogance of your heart has
deceived you, You who live in the clefts of
the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling
place, Who say in your heart, ‘Who will
bring me down to earth?’
8. 4 “Though you build high like the eagle,
Though you set your nest among the stars,
From there I will bring you down,” declares
the LORD.
9. 5 “If thieves came to you, If robbers by
night— O how you will be ruined!— Would
they not steal only until they had enough?
If grape gatherers came to you, Would they
not leave some gleanings?
10. 6 “O how Esau will be ransacked, And his
hidden treasures searched out!

for a video walk through al-Siq (the
Shaft) toward Al Khazhneh (the
Treasury).
Imagine trying to sneak up on the
Edomites as you experience the video.

19. Step 3: Read the verses again, but this time
pay attention to the imagery placed in the
Scriptures that you gleaned from the
pictures and video.

hidden treasures searched out!
27. Step 4: Reflect on what you read.
Think about these few questions.
28. Can you imagine Israel’s frustration in
trying to defend themselves against Edom?
Edom could hide in their elaborate caves. If
Israel tried to approach Edom’s capital.
Edom could simply drop stones on them as
Israel’s army walked through the Shaft (al-
Siq).
29. Did you notice an elevation in your
understanding of the short reading?
Recognizing that the Bible tells real stories
about real places not only increases your
understanding but builds your faith in the
trustworthiness of the Bible and its central
figure, Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
30. Al Khazneh or The Treasury at Petra Location
Ma'an Governorate, Jordan [1]
31. al-Siq (Arabic: ( )السيقtranslated: the shaft) is
the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra
in southern Jordan. The dim, narrow gorge
(in some points no more than 3 meters wide)
winds its way approximately one mile and
ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin,
Al Khazneh (The Treasury).
The Siq is a natural geological fault produced
by tectonic forces and worn smooth by
water erosion. The walls that enclose the Siq
stand between 91–182 meters (300–600 feet) in
height.[2]
