Third Grade Subject Learning Standards
By the end of the year, each student should be able to do the following things in each subject:
Reading Standards (R3)
Code Identification Key:
PH= Phonics
Code Description
R3.PH.1 Understand that each letter makes a specific sound, and that some
letters can have a hard and a soft sound
R3.PH.2 Correctly identify consonant letters and produce their sounds
R3.PH.3 Correctly identify vowel letters and produce their sounds
R3.PH.4 Recognize consonant clusters and diphthongs and produce their
sounds
R3.PH.5 Understand the “long e” rule and how it changes the pronunciation of
certain words
R3.PH.6 Recognize and correctly pronounce words with silent letters
WR= Word Recognition

R3.WR.1 Recognize and read up to 100 sight words
R3.WR.2 Identify and know the meaning of most common prefixes and suffixes
R3.WR.3 Decode multi-syllable words and words with Latin suffixes
R3.WR.4 Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words
FLE= Fluency and Expression
Code Description
R3.FLE.1 Read grade-level texts fluently at a minimum of 110 words per minute
R3.FLE.2 Read grade-level texts using appropriate rhythm, pacing, phrasing,
punctuation and intonation
R3.FLE.3 Read grade-level texts with a 90% accuracy or higher
R3.FLE.4 Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and
understanding

LRA= Literary Response Analysis
Code Description
R3.LRA.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text,
referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
R3.LRA.2 Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse
cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain
how it is conveyed through key details in the text.
R3.LRA.3 Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or
feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of
events
R3.LRA.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a
text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.
R3.LRA.5 Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or
speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and
stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier sections
R3.LRA.6 Distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of
the characters.
R3.LRA.7 Explain how specific aspects of a text's illustrations contribute to what
is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize
aspects of a character or setting)
R3.LRA.8 Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories
written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g.,
