NPO – Creative Case for Diversity
People with a learning disability are far less likely to have a job than the general population.
Everyone deserves the chance to play a meaningful role in society
Source – NHS Digital
Businesses have a role to play in showing their engagement with the local community
Larger companies have community champions tasked to link the brand to social good
We are often asked to provide content where there is a need to show a community response
Digital is the cost-effective answer to this – capture is quick, editing can provide a range of messages and the final product can easily be shown online
Here we produced an oral history and photographic exhibition of the traders at Fargo Village for Historic Coventry
To facilitate having a meaningful role in society, we explore ways to enable independence
Young people with learning difficulties want to feel “grown up” and independent
Developed by Coventry University and tested by our group, Work Buddy enables employers to break down tasks into simple steps so new recruits can learn to do them on their own
Learners loved the video content and being independent, no help was needed by support workers
Digital enables our participants to access what are often dry subjects
We try to teach dry subjects in a creative, fun way – This was a session on Health & Safety awareness when filming
Learners used the Work Buddy app to follow all steps before they could begin filming
Roles allocated – set director, cameraman, actor and health and safety officer in each team
It was like a game with a reward at the end
Learning outcomes were to know how to film safely and to a brief
Technology itself can be exciting
Here we worked with Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Freefall team to use technology to show movement – in this case to mimic the brush strokes of a painting that inspired a dance performance
Bio-luminescence, or communicating with light, is the most common form of communication in the world because of the number of species in the deep oceans
Here we used it to lessen anxiety about performing and to inject some fun
We work with 16-25 year olds – digital is part of life, but how it’s done isn’t often understood
We do this through a longer project, in which they believe they are just making a film together
Digital enables our participants to achieve a Level 1 Award in Employability and Development Skills
We gather evidence of participation for their qualification through documentary and a finished product
In this case, the end product won Best Emerging Talent Oska at Oska Bright Film Festival 2016
Creativity is predicted by the World Economic Forum to be one of the top 3 necessary skills in 2020, so learning to be creative is critical for those due to go into the employment market shortly
From storyboarding to make up – we show our participants all the skills that are needed in film projects
Our groups normally split into technicians, performers and crafters
We work with local theatre companies to help participants learn about improvisation and how this adds to the final digital project – film in our case.
Media/creative teams consist of presenters, with storytelling and “acting skills” aswell as the obvious technical roles
It’s important to show that performance is a major part of any digital presentation – film, vlogging etc

Our role going forwards is to share what we do with the wider museum sector to enable further work with and for young people with learning difficulties
We’d like to hear more from the sector about their needs so we can tailor our online resources and workshops to suit those needs
