EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION EXAMPLES
Kinder
Students listened to a story titled “The Kings Towers.” The story challenges students to create
towers for the king’s castle using red, blue, yellow, and green stones. The students in were
taught how to open an Excel document and use the fill tool to create color combinations in the
cells. This lesson not only challenged the students to think about strategies to arrange the
colors, it allowed the students an opportunity to explore Excel.
First Grade Animal
Students made a combined list of pets of all the students in the class and the number of each
pet. Students then input the data into an Excel document and utilized the Chart tool to create a
graph of all the animals. Students were then taught how to copy the chart and insert it into
PowerPoint. Next students created a PowerPoint presentation to share the results of their
graph. The PowerPoint presentation was limited to five slides that included a title slide and a
concluding slide. The objective of the lesson was for students to prepare an analysis of the data
collected about pets. Students were taught how to create a PowerPoint presentation, choose a
theme to be carried out for the presentation, present only information relevant to the analysis.
In addition, students had the opportunity to use animation and learn how to use the various
tools to make the show run without clicking the mouse.
Second Grade Math
Students learned how to use formulas in Excel to create the Fibonacci sequence, calculate Pi,
and create multiplication charts. Students had an opportunity to explore Excel to create other
formulas. PowerPoint was used to create tessellations. Student created a one slide PowerPoint
Presentation, using animation and audio to demonstrate tessellations. Students chose one
shape to tessellate. The students were taught how to format the shape to fill it with different
colors, gradient colors, or an image. The students then duplicated the shape and used the
alignment tool to create the tessellations. The animation tool was used to have the shapes
enter the slide to create a tessellation. Students then used the Microsoft SongSmith app to
create audio for the presentation.
Third Grade Building a Business
Students used Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for a variety of products. Building on the use of
Excel to graph data, students brainstormed all the toys owned by the group. Next they
categorized the toys and input the data into Excel and created a graph. Students then used
Word to create an analysis of the graph. The Word documents were then saved as a PDF and
uploaded to FlipSnack to share with parents. The third grade primary unit was to build a
business. The culminating product was to create a cost of production using Excel, create a
business plan using Word, create a logo using PowerPoint, create an infomercial using iMovie,
and present all of this information to the class and parents.
Fourth Grade Robotics
Students explored robotics using the Lego Mindstorms EV3 kits and the Lego Green City
curriculum. The robots were programmed using both iPads and laptops. Students used iMovie
to document the building and programming of the robots. The culminating project was to
demonstrate and share the robot build and the programming steps each team used to complete
the challenges of the Green City.
