To Whom It May Concern:
Re: Reference Letter for Kent Cox
I am writing in fuIl support of Mr. Kent Cox's application to become a teacher. I have been a
full-time or tenured member in three geography departments between T992 and 2010 and served
as the President of the Ontario Division of the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAGONT)
from 2005 to 2011. In 2011 I was transferred to the new Environmental Studies Program at
Laurentian University and participated in developing its academic program. I also served as
Registrar of Algoma University from 1998 to 2001 . As a result, I have worked with many faculty
and staff colleagues and 1000s of students in various capacities from a multitude of institutions
in the province and beyond.
I have known Mr. Cox since 2010 when he was enrolled in several of my human geography
courses. In total, Mr. Cox took four 3-credit upper year geography courses from me and always
earned good grades. I came to know him well and enjoyed seeing his name on class lists.
Mr. Cox is a strong communicator. His research skills are also good and he demonstrated that he
understands how to use theory to frame analytical investigations. He writes well and frequently
participated in class discussions. Many times, he would lead the discussion or introduce a new
way of looking at the urban/cultural topic begin discussed. His comments were always valuable.
Mr. Cox so impressed me that in his final year of studies I asked him to be my Teaching
Assistant (TA) for my first year Introduction to Geography course. He assisted me for two terms
and led a class each term. Students mentioned that they enjoyed his style. In addition to leading
these classes, he also assisted me with grading w-eekly exercises, term tests, a written library
assignment and parts of the final exams. His marking was always done in a timely fashion and
he graded consistently and fairly. He was one of very few of my TAs to actually take up my
offer to lead a class. He has long wanted to be a teacher and his enthusiasm and talent for this
profession showed in the way he approached all aspects of being my TA.
In addition to serving as my TA, Mr. Cox also house and pet sat for me several times when I was
out of town. He was an excellent house and pet sitter and I always felt confident when he was
looking after things; I trusted him immensely.
