2. Definition of baptism
There is a wide confusion of what baptism really is but we need
to go to the bible and find a biblical definition.
• According to Standard Bible dictionary baptism is “ a ceremonial
washing in which a person was immersed in water”. Therefore,
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water as a
token of his previous entrance into the communion of Christ’s
death and resurrection.
3. NATURE OF BAPTISM
• There are many view regarding the nature of baptism and some as follows
below,
• 1. Sacramental view- This view argues that baptism helps one to be justified
in the sight of God.
• 2. Covenantal view- This view argues that baptism is a covenant between
man and God in the New Testament just as circumcision was a covenant
between man and God in the Old Testament.
• 3. Symbolic view- This view simply affirms the inner change that has already
taken place at conversion.
4. NATURE OF BAPTISM
• We have two people who were interviewed to hear there belief on the nature
of baptism. Pastor Banda is going to explain his view on baptism in this
short video taken in his house.
• Conrad Mbewe comments “ Baptism is a way in
Which you join the church of Jesus Christ”
5. NATURE OF BAPTISM
• Another one to help us on the understanding was a teenager by the name of
Grace who was also interviewed to help us understand the view of baptism.
6. CANDIDATES FOR BAPTISM
• There are two many categories on the candidates in this research and that is;
• i. Infant baptism
• ii. Believers baptism
• I will explain why infant baptism is not biblical and this is because of the
nature that it play. If it is for those who have believed in the Lord Jesus
Christ then there is no need for infants to be baptized.
7. CANDIDATES FOR BAPTISM
An infant has no idea what it means
to understand God’s plan of salvation
and she/he can not understand the
nature of sin and therefore cannot
repent and receive Jesus as savior
8. BELIEVER’S BAPTISM
Since this comes after one has made a profession
of faith and it is an act of obedience. Louis
Berkhof “ The Church should require a profession
of faith of all adults seeking baptism”. When we
study the book of acts we cannot miss the
evidences that all those who were baptized were
believers.
9. Conclusion
• The only requirement for man is faith in the finished work of Christ on the
cross and basing salvation on baptism is holding onto salvation by works
which is against the teaching of scripture ( Eph. 2:8-9). When we get saved
we need to declare our faith publicly and therefore, baptism is a public
confession of our faith to those who are present at the time when we are
being baptized as a sign that we have died to the things of the world and we
have made a decision to identify ourselves in the death of Jesus Christ.
