2. The idea that gave birth to an industry
The concept was trialled using a towed, high-power source
of EM energyandaseriesofreceiversplacedatknownlocationson
theseabed.Byloggingtherefractedenergycollectedfromsubsurface
layers, they were able to identify areas of high electrical resistivity –
a direct indicator of hydrocarbons.
Theirtechnique,‘seabedlogging’,provedremarkablysuccessful.
A new company, Electromagnetic Geoservices – EMGS – was formed
toprovidethefirstcommercialseabedloggingservice.Andtheybecame
the founding fathers of a new industry.
EMGS has remained market leader, training the world’s leading
experts in EM and ceaselessly refining the technology and systems
used to acquire, process, visualise and interpret EM data.
Clearplay — EM comes of age
Today, EMGS reinforces its pre-eminence in EM with the launch
of Clearplay, the world’s first fully integrated EM system.
Clearplay melds all the EM expertise and experience of EMGS
with the technology, tools and processes it has developed. It provides
seamless,end-to-endEMservicesinsupportofhydrocarbonexploration
and has extended application in both development and production
phases in life of field.
Clearplay is the product of more than a decade of hard won
experience. It provides evidence of hydrocarbons more quickly and
with more confidence. It will maximise the chance of successful
exploration outcomes, reduce risk and increase return on investment.
EM has come of age.

Clearplay — supporting development and production
Surveying to find missed opportunities or satellite fields
isvalidatanypointduringthelifeofafieldwhereitcouldextendreturn
on investment from existing assets. This is especially relevant late
in the life of a field or licence block. When the infrastructure is already
in place, a last look may pick up viable opportunities too small for
consideration at earlier stages.
As exploration moves into development, Clearplay surveys
will extend knowledge of the area immediate surrounding an identified
target or, with a tighter grid than originally used in Clearplay Evaluate,
willaddrevealingadditionaldatatoimprovefielddevelopmentdecisions.
During the production phase, the distribution of hydrocarbons
changes as the reservoir becomes depleted. Currently in RD is
an addition to the Clearplay offering which will monitor changes in
distribution, to maintain a healthy reservoir and maximise recovery.

EMGS — leading the way in EM
“It is the responsibility of the market leader to continuously
improve the technology used.”
The first glimmer of an idea came in 1997. The concept was to
use deep electromagnetic (EM) imaging to detect resistivity variations
in the subsurface that could point to hydrocarbon accumulations.
Followingpatentsubmission,theprocessoftestingthetheorycontinued
unabated for five years – from small-scale tank tests to the rigours
of a full surveys in Angola and the Norwegian Sea.
By2002,theteam’sconfidenceinthenewtechnique,‘seabed
logging’,washigh,EMGShadbeenestablishedtocommercialiseit
and, in the process, a new industry had been created. When the first
commercial discovery was achieved, in 2004, the market had the
validation it needed.
Sincethen,EMGShasremainedtotallycommittedtodeveloping
the technology it pioneered. The workforce has grown from three to
more than 300 and includes most of the best EM experts in the world.
The survey fleet has grown from one to seven vessels, the most recent
pair purpose-designed. The hardware is the most effective and robust
in the industry. The software tools to process, visualise and analyse
the EM data continue to push at the boundaries of what is possible.
And the attention to integrating all these elements, within EMGS
service offerings and with external data, is unmatched in the industry.
The technology and expertise of EMGS has remained without
parallel and so, too, has our experience: well over 350 commercial
surveys completed, more than 120 vessel months at sea and in excess
of43,000kilometrestowed–adistancegreaterthanthecircumference
of the Earth. All achievements far beyond the performance of any
potential competitor.
Underpinning all we have achieved to date, and will achieve
in the future, is an enduring commitment to Quality, Health, Safety
and Environment. It’s central to the EMGS ethos and essential to
those who work with us.
“EMGS can legitimately claim to have the best people, the
best technology, and the best analysis tools in the EM market. Whilst
none of these factors is, of itself, unassailable, my belief is that
the combination of all of them is unbeatable.” Terje Eidesmo — 2008
