How to Find a Job in Data Analytics
One last thing before we start. In other exiting news, I recently self-published my first e-book, How
to Find a Job in Data Analytics.
I'm a big fan of online networking. I love learning from others. I love shortcuts. So, I interviewed 64
data experts. In the e-book, they reveal:
How to LAND a job
How to fix your RESUME
Which data job is right for YOU
Which TOOLS are best to learn
How to land a job PROMOTION
How to perform better in INTERVIEWS
How to do the data PROJECTS to land a job
You’ll also receive a data glossary. This defines all the confusing data terms. Finally, you get a guide
explaining all the different data job roles. Perfect for beginners.
I know you are super busy. So, I condensed all this strategy and advice into bite-sized interviews. So,
you can apply the advice by just reading 5 minutes per day.

Ok, back to the ChatGPT strategy guide. Let’s get started!
3. What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI. It can understand and even generate human-like
responses.
If you show it some text, you can ask it for feedback. If you ask it a question, it will give you an
answer. Pretty cool, right?
It can reorganise information and even re-write the text for you. So, if you spend hours tailoring your
resume and cover letter to each job ad, this will make your life so much easier.
Keep in mind that ChatGPT isn't a replacement for thinking. But it will do most of the heavy lifting.
Be warned. It’s like chatting with your best friend because the feedback is sooo honest!
However, honest feedback is difficult to come by. If you ask ChatGPT the right questions, it will save
you significant time and stress.
The weaknesses of ChatGPT
This is not a perfect tool. Some weaknesses include
- Limited industry-specific knowledge.
- Content is only relevant to 2021.
- The server often crashes.
- Repetitive content.
- Long sentences.
- Can seem generic and formulaic.
- Your unique personality can get lost.
- Possible errors in formatting and grammar.
Yes, it may write long, repetitive and generic sentences. But it only does what you tell it to. Ask for
shorter sentences written in a more personal tone. Ask it to remove repetition.
You’re not looking for perfect. You want to create a base of content that you can re-write later.
The Benefits
- It does the heavy lifting so you can be more creative.
- It works just like Google. No code is required.
- Comprehensive content.
- Robots don’t get tired.
- Constructive criticism.
- Endless fresh ideas.
- It’s available 24/7.
- It’s free.
- It’s fun.
The rest of this guide is a step-by-step tutorial. I recommend reading it all the way through. After
you’ve finished, go back to the start and follow along.
4. Step 1: Find a job ad.
Open a platform with job ads. I used LinkedIn Jobs.
As an example, for this guide, I picked a Data Analyst internship at Chicken Ranch Casino.
Step 2: Open ChatGPT: https://chat.openai.com
You may need to set up a free account. You can login via Gmail or Facebook etc.
5. Step 3: Paste in the text from the job description.
When I paste the text, I put it in quotation marks “like this”. This trains ChatGPT to understand what
you’re referring to.
Step 4: Ask ChatGPT to summarise the key information.
Request that it uses line breaks & bullet points to make the text easier to skim through.
6. Step 5: Paste in the text of your own resume. (I used Luke Skywalkers resume for this example)
Step 6: Ask ChatGPT for feedback on how your resume matches the job description:
7. Step 7: Identify your most relevant experience:
Let’s recap what we have so far.
We found a job ad, summarised and ordered it by the skills and experiences the business most
wants. Next, we matched it against our own resume.
If you want to go deeper, you could paste in 10 more job descriptions and ask ChatGPT to give you a
% rating of how suitable you are for each job. Feel free to get creative.
Let’s dive into the weaknesses of our resume.
8. Step 8: Find the weakness in your resume:
Step 9: Transform your weaknesses into strengths:
Even if we don’t have 100% experience, it’s good to know what our closest relevant experience is.
9. Step 10: Ask ChatGPT how to solve your weaknesses:
Now, you can figure out if this job is for you.
One common mistake is only applying for jobs if you have 100% of the experience required.
Imagine your career as a video game. As you play the game, you want it to get more challenging. If
you had to play the same level over, you would stop playing the game. We all need to be challenged.
Try and find the sweet spot where the new job is challenging but not impossible. That’s how we
improve and how we keep it interesting.
P.S.
Thanks to Steven Bartlett for that video game analogy. I borrowed that one from him.
12. Step 13: Generate answers for the recruiter’s questions:
Here’s an example it created:
How useful is that?!
Not only do we have a list of potential questions, but it created draft answers based on our
personalised experience.
You could paste in more of your work and ask it to summarise that in an interview answer too.
13. Step 14: Create a cover letter (for this specific role based on my resume):
Luke Skywalkers' application for the Chicken Ranch Casino is really coming together. I’m delighted
for him. I hope he gets the role.
ChatGPT created this cover letter but make it your own.
It talks robotically, so use the output as a base to rewrite in your own words. Sprinkle in more of
your personality.
You can also prompt it to 'describe more of the benefits of hiring me' or 'quantify my results and add
them to the cover letter'.
Play around with it.
16. Step 17: Create a resume:
I don’t recommend sending a resume it created, but it’s helpful for re-ordering your work and
getting ideas.
It created this resume:
