1. Have you caught it yet?
By Katy Carson
Have you been sat at your desk or computer or your tablet etc over the past few weeks and got
distracted by the latest gossip of Facebook or Twitter? Or hooked on random memes or YouTube
videos? If you answered yes to this then you have got the procrastination bug.
Don’t be ashamed everyone gets it. Even if they pretend they don’t. We students are renowned for our
skill in the art of procrastination. However our parents, siblings, friends and even colleagues
procrastinate things. They may admonish you when they notice you procrastinating but they know
deep down that it’s hypocritical to do so. Like I said everyone procrastinates at some point.
We all have our occasions when we hit a wall. We have no will power left and are dragged tooth and
nail into the bottomless pit of media. Everywhere we turn there is a willing distraction calling us from
our assignments and revision. Maybe it’s not our fault or maybe we should just have better will
power. I don’t know. You will, of course, have your own views on this.
Procrastination can strike anywhere, anytime… like a sickness. Yes that’s what I’d compare it to.
Don’t get me wrong it’s not an epidemic it’s just annoying. Like a cold or tickly cough.
The only words of advice I have for you is to just push through it. That’s it really. That’s all you can
do. I have been in that situation severaltimes myself this year already. Sitting staring at revision notes
but not seeing them, blinking at my computer like the cursor on my word document awaiting my
words. I have battled through this blankness and come out the other side a little battle scarred from
dragging my will power through the mud. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. It’s like you
fight your subconscious, willing it to come up with the words you want to write or to remember the
notes you’re reading. It is a battle, but we can win. Procrastination is never absolute. Happy revising
and essay writing… if there is such a thing.
