American Cancer Society Leadership Letter
December 1, 2014
Sponsorship Committee
Community Hospital
2021 N. 12th
Street
Dear Committee,
The American Cancer Society would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Community Hospital and its
dedicated employees for their impassioned support of the 2014 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of
Mesa County. We are truly grateful that Community Hospital has embraced this event and cause so strongly,
helping our community to raise more than $18,700 to help the American Cancer Society finish the fight
against breast cancer.
More than 159 community members joined together at Sherwood Park with a common goal – to raise
awareness and funds to end breast cancer. It is through your commitment, support from the rest of our
community here in Mesa County, and the dedication of communities across the nation that the American
Cancer Society is helping to finish the fight. With nearly 300 Making Strides walks held nationwide in 2014,
the Society is determined to save more lives from breast cancer by funding groundbreaking research to
better understand, prevent, find, and treat the disease; providing free comprehensive programs and support
to patients, survivors, and caregivers; and helping people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or
find it early, when it is most treatable. Your generosity and unwavering dedication to the cause helps the
Society continue toward its goal of finishing the fight!
Thank you again for playing an active role in the fight as a flagship sponsor for the 2014 Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer walk. Your contribution is vital to the success of our event and the impact we are able
to have in the fight against breast cancer. On behalf of more than 3 million breast cancer survivors
nationwide and all those touched by breast cancer, thank you for helping the American Cancer Society finish
the fight.
Sincerely,
Relay For Life Specialist

American Cancer Society’s Impact on Breast Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2014, 232,670 new cases of invasive
breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women nationwide in 2014, and an estimated 40,000
women are expected to die from the disease. In Colorado, that includes 3,780 newly diagnosed women
and 530 women who are expected to die from the disease. Thanks to the support of companies and
community members nationwide, funds raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks help
the Society finish the fight against breast cancer in many ways.
Making an impact in the fight against breast cancer
Thanks in part to the American Cancer Society and its Making Strides supporters, breast cancer death rates
have decreased by 34 percent since 1989, translating to more than 203,000 lives saved from breast cancer.
The American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough
in recent history, including:
Establishing mammography as the standard for breast cancer screening
Discovering lifesaving treatments, such as Herceptin and Tamoxifen
Discovering genes that cause breast cancer
Confirming the knowledge that genetics, body weight, lack of exercise, and alcohol use can increase
breast cancer risk by 34 percent

American Cancer Society’s Impact in Colorado
Until cancer is a thing of the past, the American Cancer Society is there for those who hear the words, “you
have cancer.” In 2013, the Society was able to provide the following resources to individuals touched by
cancer, including breast cancer patients.
Information 24 hours a day: The American Cancer Society is available 24 hours a day, seven days a
week at 1-800-227-2345 to anyone seeking information about cancer. So far in 2014, our cancer
information specialists answered more than 9,398 calls from individuals in Colorado. In addition, the
Society’s website, cancer.org, recorded 543,455 visits as of November 14, 2014 from people in
Colorado seeking information and resources to help them through their cancer experience.
Patient service programs: American Cancer Society programs serve thousands of cancer patients and
their families in Colorado each year. More than nine services were provided to approximately 133
people in Mesa County in 2014. This includes the Society’s Reach To Recovery® program, which is a
peer-to-peer support program for women facing or living with breast cancer. In 2013, 94 women in
Colorado utilized this program.
Lodging during treatment: The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® program offers free overnight
lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers who have to travel away from home for treatment. In
2014 Colorado saw 409 nights of free or reduced-rate lodging provided to cancer patients receiving
treatment away from home.
Transportation to treatment: The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program provides
free rides to cancer patients to and from treatments and cancer-related appointments. In 2014, a
total of 3,517 rides to treatment were provided in Colorado through this volunteer driver program.
