31. Norwalk lots are now cleaner, safer and more sensibly priced. Solar-powered
pay stations are being added to improve everyone’s sense of eco-friendly. And,
because a better parking experience means a better Norwalk experience, we’re
adding information kiosks with Norwalk’s own parking “ambassadors”.
And you’ll like this: Norwalk on-street parking meters are some of the first on the
Eastern seaboard to accept credit cards. Soon you’ll even be able to increase
your metered parking time right from your cell phone! Talk about answering the
call for convenience…
Best of all, these great improvements (and more) are NOT funded by taxpayer
money. Norwalk has a self-paying, self-improving parking system.

While there have been rec-
ommendations by some in
the General Assembly to
merge some functions of the
motor vehicles department
with other agencies, Malloy
said he believes it will remain
a stand-alone agency for at
least the near term.
“In the future, I think
there’s a real possibility,” he
said.
Both he and Currey have
also spoken about possibly
expanding the use of third
party organizations to pro-
vide various DMV services
such as photo license
renewals. Currently, the state
has an arrangement with the
AAA automobile club.
Currey said she believes
the DMV is the ideal place for
her to work.
“I have spent the majority
of my career working with
constituents and my aim has
always been to make it work
better for people,” she said.
“Government is working for
the people and we should do
everything in our power to
make it work well and we
should do it as cost-effective-
ly as possible.”
Currey lives in East
Hartford with her husband
Donald. They have four chil-
dren and three grandchil-
dren. She was first elected
mayor in 2005.

Happy New Years From Italia
has mirrored that of Norwalk
Public Schools, although Side
by Side instructors are not
unionized. So, too, might
staff members adopt an HSA
medical plan.
When the Norwalk
Federation of Teachers
adopted its HSA plan in
2009, The Hour reported
savings well into the mil-
lions.
“Those are two things our
finance committee will really
take into consideration,”
Nittoly said.
He added “We are still in a
good enough position where I
don’t see any kinds of drastic
cuts to positions or pro-
grams.”
In addition to its state-
allocated charter funds, Side
by Side qualifies for federal
money like Title I, which
comprises between $40,000
and $50,000 of its yearly
operating budget, Nittoly
said.
And like any school, Side
by Side can raise funds inde-
pendently.
Every year, Nittoly said
the community holds a gala
and a wine-tasting event to
support the experiential pro-
grams, including educational
field trips, that form the
backbone of the Side by Side
curriculum.
In 2010, Side by Side also
netted a one-year endow-
ment of more than $111,000
through Connecticut’s 21st
Century Learning
Environment Program. That
money was earmarked to
revolutionize classrooms
through technology.
“Fortunately, we have not
had to make any significant
cuts yet,” Nittoly said,
adding that Side by Side has
“planned around a rainy
day” by setting money aside
for potential capital projects.
“But that’s not to say there’s
any more of a cushion. We
are nearing the point where
there will be more difficult
decisions down the road.”
