3. Many of us are ready for summer and all it has to offer because it means more
fun under the sun. But what do you when all of that summer fun starts taking its
toll on your skin? It’s just a simple fact that the sun can damage our skin and
cause various skin problems.
Keep your summer bump, rash, and itch-free by using these tips to prevent
unwanted skin problems:
4. 1. Acne Breakouts
When sweat mixes with bacteria and oils on your skin, it can clog your pores. If
you have acne-prone skin, this often means breakouts. Dermatologists
recommend the following to prevent acne:
• Blot sweat from your skin with a clean cloth or towel instead of wiping sweat
off because wiping can irritate your skin later, leading to a breakout.
• Wash sweaty clothes, headbands, towels, and hats before wearing them
again.
• Use products labeled non-comedogenic, “oil-free,” and “won’t clog pores” for
your face, neck, back, and chest.
5. 2. Dry, irritated skin
Even the weather is hot and humid; you can still have dry and irritated skin. The
biggest culprits are spending time in the sun, pool, and air-conditioning. If your skin
starts to feel dry despite the humidity, try these tips:
• After getting out of the pool, shower and shampoo immediately using fresh, clean
water and a mild cleanser or body wash made for swimmers.
• Apply water-resistant sunscreen, SP30+, and offers broad-spectrum protection 20-
30 minutes before going outdoors.
• Refrain from using soap or body wash labeled “antibacterial” or “deodorant” as
these can dry your skin. Opt to use a mild cleanser instead.
• Use a warm shower rather than hot water.
• Slather on fragrance-free moisturizer after every shower and bath. Moisturizer
works by trapping water in your skin, so you’ll need to apply it within five minutes
after shower or bath.
• Don’t forget to moisturize your hands after washing.
6. 3. Heat rash
Also known as prickly heat that is caused by blocked sweat glands. Because
the sweat and heat cannot get out, it builds up under your skin, causing a rash
and tiny, itchy bumps. When the bumps burst and release sweat, many people
feel a prickly feeling on their skin. Tips that dermatologists recommend to
prevent heat rash are:
• Wear light-weight, loose clothes made of cotton.
• Exercise during the coolest time of the day, such as early in the morning or
late at night.
• Keep your skin cool by using fans, an air-conditioner, and cool showers.
7. 4. Sunburn
Getting sunburn can spoil all the summer fun and increase your risk of
developing skin cancer. Here’s what you can do:
• Wear sunscreen that has SPF30+, offers broad-spectrum, and water-
resistant. Also, make sure to reapply every two hours.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and pants when possible.
8. 5. Athlete’s foot
While the name implies fungal infection only affects athletes, anyone who walks
barefoot in moist or public places such as swimming pool deck or locker room can
catch it. Fungal infection shows itself by causing cracked, peeling, or flaky skin, which
may ooze or blister on the soles of the foot. To prevent this from happening:
• Always wear footwear in public places where the floor is moist or wet.
• Keep your feet dry all the time.
• Wash your feet daily with soap and then completely dry them.
• If someone in the house has athlete’s foot, do not share footwear, linens, or towels
with them.
While these summer skin problems can dampen the fun, they usually do not need
immediate medical attention as these go away in a few days or weeks. However, if a
rash or other skin problem lingers or worsens, you should make an appointment with a
board-certified dermatologist.
