Data Centre Trends – TCL Data Centre Pricing UK – 2015 to 2020
The TCL Data Centre Pricing UK - 2015 to 2020 report
provides a unique survey of Data Centres in the UK from
2015 to 2020. It is based on an analysis of 150 Data Centre
Providers with 315 facilities.
TCL forecasts that total Data Centre space is to be 671,000
m2 as of the end of 2015, with Data Centre Customer
Power (DCCP) of 727 MW for the same period – and will
increase by 17 per cent by the end of 2020.
The UK Data Centre Pricing - 2015 to 2020 report forecasts
that DCCP and space is to increase by 17 per cent over the
5 year period to 2020.
The report finds that in the UK some 7 Data Centre
providers accounts for more than half of all floor space,
including Equinix, Digital Realty, Global Switch, Infinity
SDC, NTT Com (Gyron), TelecityGroup & Telehouse
Europe. The UK Data Centre market is the largest in
Europe, and accounts for 23 per cent of European Data
Centre space.
The UK Data Centre report consists of 84 pages & 58

Data Centre Trends – European Data Centre challenges
The European Data Centre is facing a series of
challenges including the following:
• Wholesale & Retail Data Centres are merging:
Selected Wholesale Data Centres (such as infinity
SDC, Digital Realty & NGD) are offering retail
services for enterprises – down to suites of space
& power and individual racks.
• Telecoms Providers are positioning themselves as
Carrier Neutral operators: with Colt, Level 3 and
Verizon offering Data Centre services independent
their network service.
• The UK Data Centre market is increasingly being
segmented between a highly connected London-
based ecosystem and a low-cost campus-based
Data Centre outside the London area.
• Price levels are becoming increasingly competitive,
with little growth in overall price levels over time
(in GBP terms).

Data Centre Trends – Variations by Data Centre market in Europe
There remains a considerable difference in Data Centre
pricing in Europe, particularly for power:
•Germany: Selected Data Centre providers offer a
monthly rental fee per 0.1 kW of power – with pricing
for power outweighing the rental charge for space.
•Hungary: Data Centre providers offer a metered power
charge per kW Hour. There is also a once-off charge for
the installation of the meter.
•Poland: Data Centre providers have among the lowest
monthly rental rates in Europe, with full racks available
from Euro €300 per rack.
•Norway: Has the lowest power costs per kW Hour with
low cost power also available in Sweden, Iceland,
Finland & Switzerland.
•UK: Data Centre providers are now offering bundles of
space & power with power of up to 4 kW per rack
included as standard by selected providers.

TCL Data Centre Trends – The main business challenges
Data Centre providers face a range of business challenges
which include the following:
• The growth in virtualisation: With the growth in
virtualized services allowing users to reduce space &
Data Centre footprint, but requiring more power per
rack.
• The growth in cloud computing: With cloud offering a
Pay as You Go business model which provides
competition for traditional colocation services.
• The development of modular Data Centres: With self
contained power & cooling being provided in a POD
which allows rapid modular Data Centre build-outs.
• An emphasis on sustainable power: Particularly in the
Nordics, which has an abundance of low cost hydro &
wind power which is being marketed to end users.
• The lack of suitable Data Centre sites: With mature
markets, such as Paris or London, there is a shortage of
suitable connected sites for Data Centres with suitable
power, with land facing competition for other uses.
