2. INTRODUCTION
Justin Stull finished his studies as a medical student
at Sidney Kimmel Medical College this year. With an
interest in vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery, and
otolaryngology, Justin Stull is pursuing a surgical
residency.
Otolaryngologists are physicians trained in treating
diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, and throat.
Known to be the oldest medical specialty in the US,
there are seven areas of expertise in the medical field
of otolaryngology. They are: allergy, facial plastic and
reconstructive surgery, head and neck, laryngology,
otology, pediatric otolaryngology, and rhinology.
3. OTOLARYNGOLOGISTS
Otolaryngologists treat allergy issues such as
hay fever, perennial rhinitis, and chronic
sinusitis through medication or immunotherapy.
They learn reconstructive surgery techniques
including rhinoplasty, face lift, and treatment of
cleft palate or deviated septum. Otolaryngology
also includes treating thyroid and
gastroesophageal issues, ear infections,
tinnitus, and asthma. The study of pediatric
otolaryngology is dedicated to specific ear,
nose, and throat birth defects or developmental
delays, including airway problems and neck
tumors.
